How to prevent access to "dodgy sites"

I have Trend Micro PC-Cillin, which has a good feature, whereby it prevents any user from accessing "dodgy sites". Are there are decent free versions available that I can install on my sisters XP PC? Failing that, what other free "website/parental control" products do you rate?

If you are a NatWest customer with online access, when you logout of the control panel at the bottom is a link to get 1 year free to McAfee Cecurity Center which has parental, phishing and siteadvisor built in as standard obvuiously it has anti-virus, firewall ...etc too :)

Microsoft offer a free parental control application, Live Onecare as part of the "Live!" suite.

Worst of all, all computers and all users are filtered and in the case of OpenDNS, the only option is log on to OpenDNS and change the settings - something which you're likely to forget to reset afterwards.

It's not the only option, you can just change the dns servers of the machine you're using while you're using it, and change it back. This keeps the other machines on the network protected while you're looking at 2girls1cup or whatever.

OpenDNS is, for this reason, fairly easy to bypass, so if the person you're trying to stop accessing iffy stuff knows what they're doing they can change the dns servers as and when they want.

I also found that OpenDNS doesn't block every site it says it should, and I tried it with some well known sites. It generally works well though.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it
  • Have you considered a Host file - https://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

In fact spybot also comes with its own host file, it just requires enabling.
