Dont power showers use more water then baths?

I had a long shower including hairwash the other day, with the plug in, and the amount of water that collected in the bath was about 5cm.

It's a bit of a meaningless thign to say anyway - it depends on the force of the shower, how long you're in there are how deep you would normally have your bath.

BTW, I admire British people for their efforts to conserve water... just wondering, does this coincide with having to pay for it?

I live in NI and we don't pay water rates (yet!) and people here don't seem bothered about wasting water. I don't know anyone who has a water butt, for example. Do you think that we'd be more careful if we had to pay - and would you be more extravagant with it if you didn't have to pay? I am genuinely interested. Thanks.

YES, we would be more extravagant with it if we didn't have to pay for it.

Not counting the suckers who fell for the global warming lie, they are just saving water because they are stupid and can't think for them selves.
  • We have a load of out of date spices that are still going strong. All BBQ seasoning, paprika etc that I bought when I started uni... 6 years ago! Takes twice as much to get the flavour going but they're fine!!
  • Ok, I've been scanning threads, picking up tips, asking questions etc. All in the aim of saving money in the coming winter.

BUT tonight I actually asked my OH to cut the plug off the tumble dryer! I fugure I use it too much, its the easy option. So...no more!!!

My rotary line is in the lawn which is in a shaded area of the garden. No way of moving it. So I'm going to get a retractable line to go from the garage to the fence...an area which always catches the sun.

Just makes me wonder though....has anyone else done anything extreme to save money???

  • Not extreme -but it works. When my OH moved in, he retimed the central heating/boiler so it provided heat and hot water when we needed it.

As opposed to before when it was 24/7

    Has reduced our bills loads!!!

I bet! OH never used to know how to work the heating. Like an idiot, I showed him. Now I'm forever turning it off after he's turned it on!!

Again not extreme, but makes a heck of a difference to the bills. I've stopped just throwing a load of laundry in every day. In fact, now I try to wash according to the weather forecast - to take advantage of outdoor drying (limits the tumble dryer use!). I have a rotary line, as well as an extender that goes across the longest point of the garden (gets the morning, afternoon and evening sun as well :)) AND an indoor airer. Also use the landing bannisters for king-size duvet covers and double fitted sheets.
  • Other way round in this house LOL

I feel the chill and OH doesn't! So I have tons of fleeces and blankies around too and snuggle...

Cooking double batches of stews, casseroles etc in Slow Cooker, then freezing half for another day!

Last week I made a fabulous pan of soup out of veg peelings/trimmings (onions, carrots, swedes, leeks, parsnips, outer cabbage leaves) along with some home-made chicken stock (from chicken carcasses) and a couple of extra stock cubes. The whole lot would have been thrown away in my pre-OS life :j.

That sounds fab, please can I have a step-by-step recipe? New to grow-your-own and would otherwise compost all peelings, but filling tummies makes far more sense. What exactly do you do with the chicken carcasses? I have a big (preserving) pan but no slow cooker or pressure cooker, and the hob and oven are electric. Thanks
