I think it's a great idea to use the bath water to water the garden. However my sister's husband has taken this a step to far in my opinion, they share bath water (get in one after the other - nothing romantic!) then water the garden with same water, after using the loo you can't run the tap to wash your hands you must use the water already in the sink..which i suspect is same bath water (changed daily..eurghhhhh!) I've actually stopped visiting as he gets very stressed if you forget and accidentally turn on a tap..
OMG, using bathwater after someone else sounds disgusting! Wouldn't you just be bathing in their dirt? :eek: Same with expecting guests to 'wash' their hands in dirty water, ugh ugh ugh.
Your sister's husband does sound like a nightmare. I would visit them and 'accidentally' leave a tap running (just a little) for mischief. He'd probably have a fit. :rotfl::rotfl:Get to 119lbs! 1/2/09: 135.6lbs 1/5/11: 145.8lbs 30/3/13 150lbs 22/2/14 137lbs 2/6/14 128lbs 29/8/14 124lbs 2/6/17 126lbs

I don't see flushing the loo and watering the garden with bath water tight, I see it as saving both a precious commodity and pennies at the same time. Asking guests to use the water for hand washing is not only tight, it's downright selfish.
I use tea bags twice, then use two twice-used ones in for a fifth cuppa, wringing the very last bit of strength out of them. My sewing machine only comes out when I have more than one thing to work on, and that doesn't include tea bags :rolleyes:.
Perhaps I'm tight, but by saving where I can it allows me to splash out for treats for grandchildren, days out, etc. Making savings to allow you a few treats is sensible, otherwise life would be very boring..all work and no play, sort of thing0 -
BTW, I admire British people for their efforts to conserve water... just wondering, does this coincide with having to pay for it?
I live in NI and we don't pay water rates (yet!) and people here don't seem bothered about wasting water. I don't know anyone who has a water butt, for example. Do you think that we'd be more careful if we had to pay - and would you be more extravagant with it if you didn't have to pay? I am genuinely interested. If it makes you feel any better about your rescued potato, yesterday I found a Rowntrees Raspberry Jelly packet in my cupboard dated use by 1998! It was slightly dried up but still perfectly usable so I made it up and have mixed in some mixed soft fruit compote from the freezer. We'll be eating it for supper this evening and I bet my OH will not have the slightest clue as to its age. I long ago discovered that this "Best By" and "Use by" labelling was a complete nonsense. I now use my nose and my tongue, and it has never let me down yet.0

Nowadays we are sooooooo brainwashed by the big stores and the health and safety industry it is unbelievable. People implicitly believe anything past its sell by date is rotten and poisonous...anything 'value' is cheap and nasty...any 'real' food from the ground or the hedgerows is dirty and unsafe...anything not shrink wrapped in cellophane and cardboard is unclean...anything home made is dangerous and against health and safety, etc etc...
I don't blame the stores/government for these guidelines, in fact they can be useful - I just blame people for taking them as gospel and not using the evidence of their senses which their forefathers relied on since the dawn of time!
Dont get me started on the "hedgerow is dirty" arguement - someone passed us blackberry picking and their child asked if they could do it too - the parent/ adult remarked that it was unhygienic and that it was best to buy germ free ones ( at 3 quid a packet) from Sainsburys! I ask you

As for watering the garden, I try to let the rain do it as much as possible(plenty of it up here though!).
We don't have water meters in Scotland but I still hate to see water wasted.
Dont power showers use more water then baths?Vuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -

Germ free, but pesticide FULL no doubt
I think you can buy a system which routes your 'grey water' from the bath, washing machine etc to the loo, for flushing. I imagine its quite expensive though...We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret and disappointment0
