If you upgrade the bios, it'll take a Athlon XP 2600+, which is an ok CPU. The 6800GT is a good call if the price suits.
yeah but theres likely not much ram and given how expensive old ram is plus a cpu its not really worth it, i mean serioulsy you couls pick up a amd64, gig+ of ram and modern mobo from someone upgrading on ebay for under £70.
buy cheap, buy often for desktops works gets the most bang for buck, especially if you punt the old bits on.0 -
Hi, Hope you dont mind but I could do with advice as to a seperate graphics card for my computer which at present I am using a dual head Matrox Millennium G400, I run two monitors for photoshop and playing around with Dreamweaver.
The computer is a Time AMD ATHLON 2700+ 2.16ghz with 768mgb of ram which I believe is PC 3700.
Would I be better taking the old Matrox out which is pretty poor really and doesnt give much clarity, Could I run one monitor from the on boards graphic and have a stand alone graphics card for the everyday use, if so what card and memory would you recommend ?
Also I notice DDR2 memory is very cheap but the memory my computer takes seems to be expensive, is the PC3200 or 3700 the only memory I can use, and if so does anyone know if the cheapest place to buy it, I could do with an extra 1gb.
Thanks HC0 -
Hi, any advice please ? Thanks0

To know what would fit in your PC you would need to provide an actual system/model number, or a motherboard make and model.Out of my mind. Back in 5 minutes.0

You'd be better starting your own thread. However PC3700 & PC3200 RAM arre DDR RAM. This is an old technology that was replaced by DDR2, even this is about to be replaced by DDR3 which is just starting to be used. The different types of RAM are not interchangeable so you cannot use the cheaper DDR2 RAM unless you're lucky to have a motherboard whohc has slots for both types but this is unlikely. You could look for second hand RAM though.
Personally, I'd look at a new motherboard, CPU and RAM. It will cost a bit more but will give you a significant performance boost. It's my problem, it's my problem

And it's my problem if I have no friends

Actually for the Sims and the Sims2 the FX200 isn't too bad, you can see all the cut scenes with that one (I had that in my old PC, 256mb one), if you wanted to see the bump maps on clothes you can, using a cheat "useshaders true" (I think thats the right cheat!). The minimum requirements for the game on the back of the boxes only refer to that individual expansion, so the better card and memory etc you have the more smoothly it will run.
There are better cards about but the FX200 will give you better graphics on the sims game then the one you have now. I only have the 6200 (PCI express) now but my game runs great.
Edit: I'm editing this after the release of the freetime expansion pack. I would only recommend this card now if you are not intending installing Freetime, even my 6200 struggled with it and I had to use a cheat to stop it crashing on me. I have now upgraded to a 7600.Well I can't stand by the side
And watch this life pass me by
Just want to be...Happy0
