i have had an accident and not sure what to do

hi at the beginning of december i hit a car that was parked across MY drive i tried to miss the end and just hit it. ( really silly i know!) well anyway the owner of the car returned form my neighbours and was ok about it we agreed we they would get some quotes, as the damage wasnt much. (popped in at section past back wheel and some scratches, not a mark on my car!)im not a car person as you can probably tell by description of damage, but damage seemed not too bad and kind neighbour (who is a car man!) seemed to think it was a case of popping out dent and dealing with scratches.well anyway finally had a quote back for £600 to fix back panel bumper and respray both. now firstly i think that seems alot, secondly i am pretty sure i didnt touch bumper as i drove into side?not sure what to do now? do i call the person and ask for another couple of quotes? do i ask him to email some damage pictures to me (as hubby hasnt seen damage) so i can clarify what damage i caused? where do i stand if i do need to claim on insurance as it was on my property as he had parked acrodd the end of my drive would insurance pay for this?any help etc would be great, like i said i have never had an accident so really dont know if these prices seem right and what to really do etc.also i dont want people to think i am trying not to pay for damage, it just i want to make sure i am doing this all properly and also that im not getting ripped off too!

  • it seems a bit odd that he has waited this long to get insurance quotes it's nearly end of jan I would ask for pictures of his car or go round and see it hasn't had more damage done to it since you bumped into him.even if car was across your drive you should have to pay for the damage either through insurance or in cash. i would also ask for couple of quotes. when i hit my mums neighbours car we went through the insurance it was easier to let them deal with it.even though i claimed my insurance didn't go up to much from previous year.
  • I think there is a law about people not blocking your access of your drive. I would hang fire till someone knowledgeable comes

it wasnt that i wasnt going to pay just to clarify! it was more of a case if it is £600 odd quid then i will have to do it thru the insurance as haven't got that in cash.
thank you both for your answers thou.
interesting about the whole blocking me in thing as this seems to be a constant problem EVERYONE uses it as a parking space!!
  • not sure how this wil go,but it is definatly illegal to block someone from exiting thier driveway, however it is not illegal to stop them entering.
so he was breaking the law at the time.if he wasnt breaking the law then this wouldnt have happened.

thats very interesting, thank you. i do feel i do need to pay something if not all of the amount fo the damage but at the same time i do feel like the car shouldnt have been there if it wasnt there i wouldnt have hit it. any ideas where i can find more about the law and this?

Yes it's an offence to obstruct a vehicle access to the highway from a driveway (but not an offence to block a driveway if a car is not in the drive). However I think you are still going to have to pay for the damage as you were aware of the car and hit it. Did you ask your neighbours friends to move the car before attempting to get out? I think you will find you have to inform your insurers at the time of any accident even if you don't claim from them. A month or so on it's going to be hard for either party of prove what the damage was without photographic evidence. Next time you have an accident take photos before anyone moves their car.

Regardless of where it was parked, you hit it, you pay. End of.

Someone ran gently into my front bumber & the damage cost £800, it's surprising to see the cost sometimes.

Do you have a dropped kerb over your driveway entrance?
