Hi all,
Having worked in the Mobile retail sector for Virgin Mobile until not too long ago, I thought it would be worthwhile to share the tips I picked up on how to get the most for your money with Virgin Mobile. My tips will cover both PAYG for new customers, PAYG for existing customers and the really rather good SIM-only offer as well.
Disclaimer:
This honestly isn't some pro-Virgin mobile spiel (even if it may end up sounding like it is!), simply a guide on how to get more for your money, so hopefully that's how this guide is seen! (and seeing as I worked for Virgin Mobile, I know the best way to get the best deals with them). There's nothing in here that's not already on offer, I'm simply bringing all of the promotions together for you all to take advantage of!
PAYG New Customers
The best way to get more for your money here, is to do the following:
1). Buy the handset WITHOUT the sim-card to immediately have the price reduced by £4.99.
2). Buy a PAYG sim-card for the current offer price of £2.49 (saving you £2.50 over buying the sim with the phone). These sim-cards come with £1 credit already, and if you register your details on www.virginmobile.com : within 48hrs of doing so, you'll be given £2 of extra airtime (and some downloads) for FREE! (as always, check their site for what you can download with the offer). Making you back an extra 51p of airtime over the cost price.
3). Now ask for a 'Connect a Mate Sim Card' with a fiver on it. IF the store have any left, and you ask nicely, the new connect a mate PAYG sim cards come with £5 of airtime already on them and they're FREE! And the best news? If you get one, register THAT online as well for ANOTHER £2 airtime (giving you £7 in total for nothing!). Now, I can't guarantee that you will get a free connect a mate sim card with £5 on it, as it will depend on whether or not your store have any left in. (also note that this is an in-store only item, and can't - to the best of my knowledge - be acquired via phone or net).
Why buy a PAYG sim card and not just get a free CAM with the fiver on it? I hear you ask, well, because it's a tad bit cheeky just asking for it (as the staff don't HAVE to give you one as it's at their discretion), and I think of it as a fair trade, £2.50 for 2 sim cards and a total of £10 airtime is still a cracking deal! And most importantly, because Virgin offer 3p texts/cheaper calls to other Virgin Mobile users, the 2nd spare Sim Card can be given to someone you'll contact often, making the long-term savings even greater still! :j
PAYG Existing Customers
1). As above, buy your handset sim-card free (as you'll already have one), reducing the price by £4.99.
2). If you've been with Virgin Mobile longer than 3 months, ask them to check your 'Red Rewards', Please note that you'll need some form of ID for security checks before your account/discount can be discussed!
More on 'Red Rewards': http://www.virginmobile.com/vm/genericContent.do?contentId=upgrades.whychooseus.sm078
3). Ask for a 'connect a mate' Sim card, as again, it comes with a fiver already on it. If they have none left, it's worth getting another PAYG sim-card for £2.49, registering it for the extra airtime, sticking it in your old phone and using it for emergencies. No point wasting a perfectly good older handset! (Assuming it's still working of course!)
Sim-Only Deal
If you want a 'newer' handset, but you don't want an uber-fancy and very expensive one, then buying a cheaper PAYG handset and then going for their SIM-only deal is a great way to save money. Because you're not subsidising the cost of the handset, you get more cross-network minutes and texts for less per month (from £15). Also, you're not tied into a fixed term contract (you can give 30-days cancellation notice anytime after your first 30-days), so you still have the flexibility.
The sim-only deal, is also REALLY good for those of you already with Virgin who top up £15 a month or more, as you're getting A LOT more for your money, simply for setting up a direct debit!
Again, I hope the above has been genuinely helpful to some of you, and seeing as I no longer work for them I can't be accused of trying to reach my in-store targets!

If you have any questions, I'll try and answer them the best I can!

many thanks for the tip about the Red Rewards, I knew absolutely nothing about them
I have 2 SIMs & just had a look on-line at my accounts & find I've got £10 to spend on one & £60 on the other
brilliant, thanks :T :T :T0 -
The title speaks for itself: all these years on Virgin remains saddled with an inadequate T-Mobile network: ok in cities, but so many rural spots where the signal is poor or non-existent.
Such a shame for an outfit which I have found to be ultra professional.RIP independent MSE.
