wood kitchen and wood floor?

I am having a kitchen extension and I am really keen on having birchwood kitchen units - either Howdens Wycombe Birch, or the birch kitchen from Ikea.
But, I also want a light wood (birch, maple or light oak) engineered floor.

Obviously I then need a table - which will also probably be wood (have kids, not keen on having glass).

Could this work or would it look to 'woody'??

Anybody with any thoughts or is this totally the wrong forum??

My feeling is that it may look a bit stark (birch is quite a light-coloured wood). We did ours with beech units with light-cream, shaker style doors, and a solid beech worktop (not cheap, but looks fantastic). For the floor we have a cheapish laminate flooring in a sort of terracotta tile effect.

The overall effect is clean but warm. Just a thought!

Here, I found this in the Howden's range. This is the door/worktop combo I mean - http://www.topclasscarpentry.com/product/11/

I'm not keen on too much wood effect - & especially if you start mixing it a lot.

At our last house, we had limed oak laminate (B&Q) which was almost white, in living room & maple dining table & chairs.

Kitchen was gloss black units & mostly white/grey tiles together with some black ones.

All the skirting & window frames were stained deep mahogony & looked preety good, with this limited mix.

New house will have all white skirting & laminate will be blushed oak (again B&Q), so also not going for strong wood colours.

White kitchen & black worktops this time.

  • Hmmm yes, I think it could end up too woody. Would you consider slate/tiles on the floor instead?

Have oak units (B&Q) & oak floor throughout ground floor. Worktops are black granite & got supplier to suppy black granite plinths as well so this makes a contrast which works really well. Have also had black formica w/tops and sprayed plinths matt black which is a cheaper alternative.

We've got wooden cabinets and a lighter wood laminate floor. (We didn't choose it, but I quite like it!). Then the table is wood (another colour of wood) but it all blends well and is quite warm looking and feeling.

We have an oak kitchen wih oak flooring and an oak table. The way it sounds isn't great but you can break it up - we have stainless steel appliances and the work surfaces are black granite. It looks better than any kitchen than any house I've ever lived in or worked on.

I think the colours need to be similar otherwise it looks odd. Birch with oak and a bit of varnished pine would look silly, birch with birch, fair enough although birch is in danger of looking dated :o

Thanks to all for the advice.

I am now having a rethink and am maybe thinking about cream gloss units, with black granite worktops and a wood floor (light oak probably) - similar dilemma to another thread I have just read!

But, we are soon to be getting a puppy and somebody has told me that dogs can scratch the cream gloss units. Anybody with any knowledge here?

I am currently looking at the Sheraton range - matonella cream I think it's called. Anybody got that one or similar and if so, what have you teamed it up with?

    Hi

Just adding my tuppence worth. We are still in the process of doing our kitchen. We got the birch units from Ikea and a dark grey granite worktop, the kitchen table and chairs are birch from IKea and we have opted for a grey floor from Karndean which still has to be fitted. So far it looks magnificent and I'm the envy of all my friends :D . I think the cream high gloss units look nice, but a friend who has them says they show up any mark and are a so and so to keep clean. Hope this helps!
    I would if I could but I can't so I won't!

Thanks Tagz, your comments about the cream units is very helpful.
Hmmm, Karndean, somebody else mentioned that to me as an alternative to wood or stone tiles. You say it is grey, is it a slate effect?

Also, my sister-in-law has the Ikea birch kitchen with grey granite and it looks fantastic - I'm sure yours will too!

Doesn't it depend on whether you want to see that dirt? I've lived with white gloss units in two houses and yes, it shows splashes etc but you see it and you wipe it off  It's easy to wipe down and clean properly because it's so glossy.

They didn't scratch - we have cats but no dog - I guess they wouldn't stand up to a dog repeatedly trying to get into a food cupboard etc, but I guess not many doors of any kind would!

They're advertsing lovely glossy floor tiles in B&Q for less than £9 a square metre - they will be going in the next house we do I'm sure as it's a fabulous price (and we buy a lot of tiles!) The black ones were in the ad but I'm sure they do a cream/buff too.
