Your daughter will need to have the confidence to challenge an underage purchase otherwise she could committ an offence by selling, and at £2.50 per hour it's not worth it.
A very good point Trace, however once again it is down to the employer to show due diligence. Ie,signed records of training given etc, so if trading standards were to catch someone out, The employer would have to prove that the employee had recieved the relevant training. If they were unable to prove this, the employers representative, eg proprietor or Store Manager would be liable for prosecution.

In the last supermarket I worked for, you had to be 16 to serve ciggies, and 18 to serve alcohol. A massive fine is imposed on the employee and the employer, if she was to be caught selling these to underage people - big fine.
Also, imagine if one of her school peers were to try and buy - and she said no - it might well ove her trouble in school if the person was a particular jerk. As many are these days...

Are you sure about the fines. Our local council run regular exercises on sending under age children into shops to buy goods. It is the shopkeeper/licensee who is punished, not the shop employee. Ultimately it is for the shopkeeper/licensee to ensure their staff are keeping to the rules.0 -
lol
I got my first Saturday job when I was 14, working in a cake shop for £1.30 per hour. I remember being able to afford George Michael's 'Faith' and Queen's 'Night at the Opera' albums (LPs!) after a few weeks pay. I was so chuffed with myself for being able to buy something with my 'own' money!
I don't blame your daughter for wanting to work, and I don't blame you for being infuriated with this silly woman. As others have stated, she's had a lucky escape (although working in an icecream shop does sound like fun). This woman sounds like a nightmare.
The only thing I can suggest is to keep trying all the local businesses. Something else will come up."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -

The shop employee would be punished, if the employer was able to show due diligence. EG Training records, signed notification from the employee stating that they understood the laws and the penalties of breaking the law.
If the shopkeeper took someone on and gave them no training or advice and an offence was committed the shopkeeper would be liable.

MY daughter didnt actually get to work at all, she was just strung alone since before easter, then let down. As most people arent as "cautious" as me, i always like to telephone the day before to make sure all is still ok, which is what i did (luckily) the day before my daughter should have started her first day. But what would have happened if i had just dropped her off & gone out for a few hours... she would have been sent home and couldnt get it!!!
Only to be told by this dim whit she had no need for my daughter & basically if she couldnt have got hold of me on fri she would have had a word with my daughter on saturady!!! charming!!! her fist day on her first job to be told to go straight home.
mmm im still really mad, i told my daughter the silly woman has put back your start date till school hols arrive & that i wasnt happy so i think she should look elsewhere.... thort it may save her feelings as she has had enough knocks in her life... she seems to have beleived it & is ok... PHew.....
wish i could make some waves for this woman, but initially its not really my scene & 2) chances are there is nothing i can do.

Thanks. That actually makes a lot of sense with the type of shops being targeted locally, it is the ones where you might anticipate little attention is given to proper training. That would explain why the results published don't include employees being fined as well. In view of what you have put, I think they should make it more clear that there would be liability on the part of the employee to see if they can cut down a bit more on the transgressions around here.0 -
get her back- i know its childish and im sure anyone on here would like to help, i certainly would! call up or get someone else to and say u ahve 2 teenagers who are looking for two weeks work experience over summer holidays, give her a number of a phoenbox or a payas u go sim that u dont use- string her along- also contact trading standards and say u saw rat droppings in her shop- giv her grief and hassle......0

I assume you mean Environmental Health? As if they don't have enough to do without people making hoax and unnecessary calls?
You do realise that they are funded by all of us tax payers? or does that make it okay to waste their time?"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
