nowthen, does anyone know if i can cause a few ripples or tidal waves for this company....

A small local shop offered my 14 yr old a saturday job, they said it would take a few weeks to sort out & would be ok to start at easter... easter came & went and no phone call.. I called her and she said it will be a few weeks more... no problem i said... we waited and waited... still nothing.

Then 2 weeks ago she phoned .. was my daughter still wanting the job? yes i said, she offered £2.50 ph... daughter was happy. this job is to start tomorrow ... I --- me ---- NOT her phoned this morning to make sure everything was ok for tomorrow.... she says er.. well, er.... ive changed my mind and dont want her now..

Is she in breach of a verbal contract? was it an offer of a job i can make waves about? or has she stuffed me and I just have to walk away.....

grrrrrr flamin woman, couldnt run a raffle let alone a business...

TBH, would you want your daughter to work somewhere that:
1-If only offering her only £2.50 an hour and will prob make her work pretty damn hard 2-Seems to be rather unreliable and not the nicest of people.

I would cause a few probs for the women!! But only if this doesnt upset your daughter.
Im not sure u will actuall have a leg to stand on as far as the verbal contract goes, but i would give it a go.

  • can a 14 year old work in a shop? Thought they needed to be older. Our oldest was told he could do some jobs at 15 but because he was still at school he needed a work permit signed by the school and the employer. I understand your feelings towards the woman but if she is like this BEFORE your daughter starts, what will it be like after. I would worry she will get paid etc.

As far as I understand it at 14 years old they can do light work including shop work as long as it is not harmful to their health & safety, and as long as it does not interfere with their education.

That said you won't find a national retailer who will employ anyone under 16 years old.

I would seriously question the motivation of anyone who would want to employ a person under 16 at £2.50 per hour. It says exploitation all over. I would also say that someone who is so incompetent with their employment skills is unlikely to be competent in other areas including Health & Safety. Would you want your daughter working in that enviroment?? My advice is wait until she is 16 yrs and has an NI number and let her work for a reputable company.

I quite agreeshe shouldnt be working, however the majority of her friend are working & have money. So im pleased in a way this went belly up, shes far too young, but like i say, you gotta give em a bit of freedom to make their own mistakes.

    thanks for your support

Our local Sainsburys takes 'em at 15 years old. They appear to be the only supermarket that does, though.

    Hi,

    Just for the record:
Children aged 13+ up to 15
In term time no child may work for more than a total of 12 hours per week.

School Days: No more than a total of 2 hours in one day during 7.00am and 8.00am or between the end of the school day and 7.00pm

Saturdays and School holidays: No more than 5 hours on any day between 7.00am and 7.00pm.

A child cannot work more than 4 hours without a rest break of 1 hour.

Sundays: No more than 2 hours between 7.00am and 7.00pm

Children under 15 years cannot be employed for more than 25 hours in one school week.

A child aged 13 may be employed in light work in one or more of the following specified categories:
    Agricultural or Horticultural work
Delivery of newspapers, journals and other printed material
    Shop work, including shelf stacking
    Hairdressing salons
    Office work
Car washing by hand in a private residential setting
    In a cafe or restaurant
    Riding stables
Domestic work in hotels and other establishments offering accomodation.

Your daughter would have required a work permit and the employer would have been responsible for obtaining this and carrying out a risk assessment.

One other point is that many local education authorities have different rules

    HTH
    Regards

Just an after thought, if your daughter is after shop work there are some age restricted products she legally won't be able to sell e.g. alcohol for one (doesn't mean the shop wouldn't stop from selling). Obviously an offence to buy alcohol as an under 18 and for the shop to sell, but the offence is worded that the person who physically supplies it can also be caught. Police can also issue £80 fixed penalty notices on the suppler of alcohol to minors, all part of Anti-Social Behaviour etc.

Check with your local trading standards on what the minimum age limits are on the seller for certain products alcohol is a definate maybe also tobacco. Also make sure your daughter gets adequate training on the supply of age restricted products like videos/DVDs, spray paint, knives, solvents from the employer. Your daughter will need to have the confidence to challenge an underage purchase otherwise she could committ an offence by selling, and at £2.50 per hour it's not worth it.
:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:
