    You could:

    * Burn a CD-R / CD-RW of all the files.

    * Put all the files on a USB pen drive (copy the files).

    * Set-up networking between the two machines, and access the machine directly from the other. But if you aren't happy with messing around with control panels, go for one of the other two.

    There is also a files transfer wizard in XP/Vista, which might help...

    How much do you need to transfer? If you're talking tens of GB then usb sticks and cdrs might take a long while.

    I use a USB pen for small amounts of data and an external hard drive for large files.
    Step by step.
    Insert Pen into USB port.
    Windows should find it, it will be under My Computer (devices with removable storage).
    Double click it and drag files you want to transfer to this folder.
    Remove pen and put it in laptop, once again it will be under My Computer. Double click and drag the files from the Pen Drive to wherether you want it.

    External hard drive is exactly the same.

    while ethernet is the smartest option, pcworld will punt you a crossover cable for almost nothing.

    if you want an easy life then get a 3.5" external bay for £10 and plug the existing desktop drive into it then bingo you have access to all files on it and an external backup

    fyi 8gig usb pens are £20

    Upload all your files to webspace online and then download again to your laptop.
