  • I think the scotts ones are fairly small oats which personally I prefer. I'm eating these at the minute but only cos they were on 2 for £2 :)

Porridge (oats) is about the cheapest breakfast cereal you can buy anyway. Even the 'expensive' ones are a lot cheaper (by weight) than other cereals.

If it's the size, could you not blitz them for a little while to reduce the size?
If I ever get round to it then I sometimes soak them overnight with sultanas as it makes it sweet all the way through.

Yeh, forgot to mention, I soak mine first, but not overnight. Usually leave to soak whilst making tea, having shower etc

  • You've just reminded me to get my porridge oats out again!
I leave them to soak in water overnight, then add milk in the morning and nuke for a minute or so. Then add defrosted frozen fruit (home-picked black and raspberries) or jam or honey. Yum

Not being funny, but I have porridge every morning (helps with the diet:D ) and it only takes a few minutes in a saucepan on the stove. All brands seem to be about the same except for the premium type ones which have bigger 'flakes'. I tried microwaving it once and had a horrible boiling over mess:eek: , so happy if anyone has any microwave porridge tips. Is it really quicker? I work full time in a nightmare job and seem to manage ok.

I put a handful of porridge oats in a wide neck flask, cover with hot water, screw top back on then wait ten minutes then add milk sugar ect. no need to cook in micro

It is quicker because you don't even really need to stir it and you don't have to scrub it off the saucepan afterwards :D. Use a really large pyrex mixing bowl and it won't boil over. I use half a small cup of porridge to one full cup of water and one full cup of milk. Raisins or sultanas add flavour and as the others have said it is all the better if you soak it in the fridge overnight. I can have my shower while the porridge cooks itself. I sometimes add different spices or use brown sugar or golden syrup to sweeten it. Can't remember the last time I had just porridge. If you're in a flying hurry in the mornings you can tip in some frozen berries to cool it but you may need extra sugar if the berries are unsweetened.

One thing which you may or may not like; I add cooked apple to mine. Originally because I was desperate to use up apples from a tree I had in the garden. I found that apple in the mixture thickens it up (may need to add more milk) and suppresses my appetite for longer. I can go all the way to lunchtime and beyond without nibbling :A
