Sky Broadband? Not on my line!

Signed up to See, Surf & Speak package, and gave Virgin Media the elbow. Now I find that Sky don't offer broadband on my BT line they will have to 'buy it from another provider' What is this all about? Why is this? Who is this mysterious 'other provider' ? And why is there an additional charge? Can I find out who is making this charge and how long it will go on for? After all I am already going to be paying BT for use of the line, so why is there any other charge involved?

It simply means that Sky do not have their own equipment in your exchange so they are charged to provide you with broadband. They may never have their own equipment in your exchange (LLU) depending on it's location. Check here to find out more. You are paying BT for line rental and you will have to pay extra for your broadband. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
When you checked your phone number on the Sky website what did it tell you?
As Mr Coffee says if Sky havn't got their kit in your exchange they have to pay BT for using their broadband service. Its currently £17 per month, if Sky intend to LLU your exchange in the near future you may get this discounted to £5.00.
Try Wikipedia for terms like LLU, ADSL,DSLAM for info on how broadband works. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Thanks for your help - it's just annoying that I wasn't told Sky couldn't provide broadband when I switched so now instead of having one neat package I have to spend time trawling through all the deals and ins and outs of everything when if I'd known from the start I would have thought twice about switching from VirginMedia.0

Did you apply online or over the phone, if you apply online there is a telephone number checker which should have told you if you could have |Sky Base, Mid or Max.
What exchange are you on?
I'm surprised if you are in a cabled area that Sky have not LLU'd your exchange. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction - found out that I could get O2 broadband on my line for £7.50 per month with free connection and free box, so am considerably happier now.0
