Overcharge on debit card

in Credit cards
Sorry if this is not on the right board but I couldn't see a board specifically for debit cards, rather than credit cards. If there's somewhere else glaringly obvious I apologise, I'm quite tired!
My friend has been overcharged on a debit card. She picked up a few items in a newsagent yesterday and paid with her Maestro as normal. She's told me she was quoted the correct price, and the chip and pin machine she used didn't display the amount. She got a miniprint statement out of a cash machine this evening and she's been charged ten times what she should have paid. She found her receipt as soon as she got home and checked and it does say the incorrect amount on, but for the reasons stated above she had no idea at the time of paying and was in quite a rush so didn't check the receipt (to be fair I wouldn't have either, you don't expect a few sweets and some magazines to come to around £90!).
I told her to phone the store and ask to speak to the manager first thing in the morning but other than that I had no idea what to suggest. I was hoping that the shop would accept that it's just human error (cashier obviously entered an extra zero on the till) and refund her the difference, but as it's a Maesto card and not a credit card, can she do anything if they tell her to naff off?!

was it a chain or a random newsagent?
they cant really tell her to naff off because they have money that dont belong to her, dont think maestro can do anything but try ringing the bank anyway see what they say, but think main issue will be with the store. was she not given a recipt?Yes Your Dukeiness0 -
if its a chain they just should be more likely to help, see what the store say if they refuse she can always threaten legal action, the threat should hopefully scare them into paying upYes Your Dukeiness0

I don’t think there is a chip and PIN machine that does not display the amount, but it can easily happen if you are detracted. (I once wanted to pay for a shoe repair, let’s say £12.00, and the sales person entered the repair number into the till, let’s say 5425. So, absent-minded that I am, I confirmed a charge of £54.25. Well that was easily rectified the next day.)
Does the till receipt not display the item(s). Your friend should not phone, but go back to the shop, seeing her in person, the sales staff is more likely to remember her and the things that were bought. If the shop insists, that the sum charged was correct, (and she did not buy one but ten magazines) than it would be her word a gainst the shop. There is nothing that can be done, your friend cannot prove she was overcharged. The transaction has been confirmed by her with a PIN.0 -
Many retailers press the 'OK' button when the amount comes up just before the PIN needs to be entered so the customer doesn't actually see the amount.
It should be the customer who presses that OK button to confirm the amount before proceeding. I've asked them to cancel transactions because I haven't OK'd the amount before now! Then confirmed it myself before inputting the PIN.
Hope that made sense................lolI may be shy, but that doesn't make me an angel0
