Tesco broadband

Can anyone recommend an ADSL service?

I have a BT phone line, but it does not appear to have an NTE5 linebox - or, if it does, I can't find it. I have two extension sockets, and I suspect it was installed by BT before 1986.

I also have my own DSL modem and microfilters, but I do not have broadband on my phone line at the moment.

I'm looking for the cheapest new-user uncapped ADSL with no port restrictions, who will support outward migration 12 months down the line.

Does anyone know if Tesco have caps and port restrictions? Thanks.
:p

I have used Tesco from its inception and been very happy with it. No caps but I'm not sure about port restrictions?

First three months at the moment is £7.99 then £17.99 for new users.

Check out e7 - they have a special offer at the moment with 1MB uncapped ADSL for only £10 a month. Buy a year contract and then you can port anywhere you like after 12 months. You will need an NTE5 linebox to be fitted.
Try tracing the line where it enters your home.

    Cheers

    Thanks for the posts.

I've been reading up. Somewhere, I got the idea that if you don't have an NTE5 linebox, then ADSL might not work. Not sure where - but I think it's because I knew ADSL performs best when the modem is plugged straight into the linebox. But my new flat doesn't appear to have a single linebox that you can plug things into - it's only got two hard-wired extensions.

I guess that my modem or router will work if I plug it into either of the extensions - but not having an NTE5 means I won't be able to fit a faceplate, and will have to plug microfilters into both extensions. Have I got that right, anyone? Thanks.

As for the ISP - I guess any will do - but I might want to do voice-over-IP or virtual-private-networking in the future, so it's very important that the service has no port restrictions, and it's even more important that the service assigns users a real internet IP address and doesn't use network address translation (this rules out Homechoice, for example). I'm not prepared to enter a 12-month contract with an ISP unless I'm absolutely sure the service is suitable - and even if it doesn't, I'm not that keen on 12-month contracts anyway.

If I can't figure out whether a service will be suitable or not, then I'll need to be able to migrate away with no penalty after only a month - and I'll need to be able to migrate away after 12 months either way. So this rules out "they-slash-it" Tiscali.

Thanks for the help so far. :)

  • I've also been with Tesco since its inception and have had no complaints at all. There are no cap limits and as far as I am aware no port restrictions either.

im finally getting onto tesco bb but might be moving home in a months time. i was going thru the T & C and this is what is written :

    ( Relocation charges:
    - If you move house and want to relocate the Service to your new address (or if for any other reason you want to change the telephone line which you use for the Service) we will require you to start a new initial term of 12 months from the connection to the new telephone line
    - Relocation charge: Free )

so is it ok to sign up with them and not to worry about relocation charges. only reason im going to tesco is cause of uncap service and you guys have no problems.
