    Many congratulations!

In the heat of the summer, why don't you stay in Padova? It's quite close to Venice (half an hour by train?) and not as full of tourists, yet a beautiful town in its own right - and easy access links to Venice. Then again, I loved Padova!

I can't recommend any hotels in Venice, but https://www.venere.com is an excellent place to start in order to book hotels. All hotels that they have on there are reviewed, so you get a good idea of what to expect and actually search for hotels by area.

The man wants to stay in Venice not Padova.....and he does not want to spend his time in train or buses. So this having been clarified, you will enjoy Venice as I believe this will be your first visit.

Visit https://www.bestwestern.com they have a great choice of hotel in Venice within your price range. I would recommend hotel "Villa Mabapa" situated on the Lido island 10mn boat/bus from St Marc square. It has Queen size and breakfast for €121/night on the 5th August.
The Lido has a beach (not many of those in venice) and quite a nice experience of peace and quiet, the town only being a few minutes away.

To start with from Marco Polo airport take the bus No.5 that will take you in 20 mn to Piazza da Roma, the farthest place cars are allowed to go. Then you can either walk along the canals to your hotel destination or take the appropriate boat/bus (vaporetto) close to your final destination.

    Enjoy Venice.

    try https://www.ctopustravel.com or https://www.totalstay.com
I can recommend Savoia e Jolanda hotel just round the corner from St Marks Square right on the front overlooking the lagoon. https://www.savoiajolanda.it
I think I booked with them through TotalStay and got it much cheaper than the advertised rate.
They also have a cheaper sister property called Villa Igea which looks nice.

Could try Ponte dei Sospiri hotel https://www.alpontedeisospiri.com they have an annex practically in St Marks Square which has a room (Proust) for 140 euros per night but I'm sure if you email them they would do a special offer!

Had three nights at Pensione la Calcina (Ruskins House) last weekend.
Recommended. Paid 141euros per night per double room, but well worth the extra money.
You might be struggling for an august reservation, but there's no harm giving them a ring - they might have a cancellation. They all speak good english (better than our italian!).

We stayed in this hotel last summer....

It might be a little over your budget BUT it is a cracking hotel.

It is only yards (and I mean yards) away from St.Marks but is very quite at night. Rooms were excellent and to top it all you have your breakfast on the terrace of the Grand Monaco hotel (only continental but very nice all the same) which over looks the Grand Canal. We asked for a triple room and ended up with a whole suite.

Failing this I would recommend tripadvisor.com for plenty of honest reviews of hotels in Venice.

Would also second venere.com ... they have a great list, you can search via location/price/rating etc and they have a review section which helped us decide to go with http://www.lanternadimarcopolo.com excellent location. 1 minute from the Rialto Bridge and 5 mins from St Marks Square (you may get lost! took us a while) staff give you a map on arrival and will mark directions for any destination you want. They really went out of their way for us, even babysat while we had our breakfsat! We had a fantastic time there in Feb. Although, they don't have a lift, so, if you don't wanna be on the top floor, do ask for a room on 2nd or 3rd floor!

    Enjoy and congratulations!
I can say whatever I like here ... 'cos no one can see me .. ner ner ner ner ner !!!....

How do you know I ain't sitting here butt naked?!?!

I thunk I've made you think for a minute!

Just spoke to a friend of mine who I arrived at Hotel Villstucky (https://www.villstucky.it), halfway between Treviso and Venice. He seems to be happy with the room and location. I booked him through Octopus and the total cost for 2 night (Double) was £82. Took him 15 minutes from Treviso Airport to Hotel (€20) and about 15-20 minutes by Train to Venice.

    Hope it helps

    Regards,

We stayed at the San Moise, it's very central and good value.

We got upgraded to a suite on arrival, but that was out of season.

    Have a great time.

    Two replies so far:

    Hotel "Al Ponte dei Sospiri"

    Dear Sir,
we can offer you a Junior Suite with canal view and view of the famous
Bridge of Sighs for the period from 05 to 08 August 2005 (3 nights) at the
price of 260 euros per night with breakfast and taxes included. Junior
Suites without view are available at the price of 230 Euros per night. There are eight Junior-Suites available, each furnished with velvet and precious brocade in different styles and
colors. Each suite offers the refinement of decor and the modernity of every
conceivable convenience, equipped with air conditioning, satellite TV, fully
stocked mini-bars, a safe for your valuables, electric clothes iron, and a
spacious bathroom with a Jacuzzi massage tub where you can relax after a day of exploring.

And from PENSIONE LA CALCINA - RUSKIN'S HOUSE

for the requested period 5-8 august, our hotel is fully booked but we have available our appartment Viola, 70 metres far from the hotel ,at the dialy rate of euro 223 with breakfast in hotel included

My wife favours the Al Ponte dei Sospiri but it is expensive at £530 for 3 nights, although an out of this world experience I expect.

We have looked at the Hotel San Moise and it looks good, 130-200Eu per night and right in the centre of things, this is the winner so far with us.

My Italian (though English born) friend tells me Venice will be expensive in August, if we are careful/prudent will be ok?

Many many thanks for the replies.

We stayed at the locanda San Augustin in March and were well looked after by the staff. I think it was about £90 a night but there were lots of reasonably priced restaurants and pizzarias around - even those on the Grand canal by the Rialto Bridge were okay.

Take a vaporetto trip out to Murano, you don't have to go into any of the showrooms and it makes a change from the crowds in Venice. Buy a biglietto at the airport, we got one for 72 hours and as well as getting us from the airport into Venice and back we could hop on and off vaporettos whenever we liked...much cheaper than individual tickets, great value!
