is there anything wrong in me putting my son as second driver on my policy. because if i put him as first driver on his own policy it comes to over £4000 that horrendous.

It's called "policy fronting" and is technically illegal. It means your son would technically be uninsured, although you'd only be found out in the event of an accident. Also, as you took out the policy you would probably be held financially liable for any accident making it a whole lot more expensive.

As for it being £4k, I am guessing either you live in the crime capital of the UK or the quote is for a 3 litre V6. Can the car be changed to a more insurance friendly one (he might not like driving a "crap" car, but if he prefers the bus...)? Have you tried adding parents as named drivers to a policy quote in his own name? Have you tried shopping around using multiple sites, like confused.com (and not just calling up your favourite insurers)?

If you weren't the main driver, and he used it to go to work etc then it's policy fronting. Some people do it and it seems they get away with it.

    See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/inside_money/7053307.stm

http://www.fairinvestment.co.uk/insurance-news-‘Fronting’-on-car-insurance-policies-deemed-'false-economy'-475.html goes so far as to say it is in fact a false economy, which I agree with to a certain extent. He'll never get his own no claims.

A Corsa is a "boy-racer" car that's the sort of car young men will drive around town like a nutter with all their mates and crash. Your son may well be very sensible, but the insurers stereotype cars and then add on 17 and male unfortunately.

I'd try get quotes for a range of other cars, it's the best opportunity of saving money on insurance. Doesn't cost anything to get an insurance quote. You could start perhaps by looking at https://www.autotrader.co.uk and putting in your postcode and the price range and working through the ones that are 1.3 and under.

doesn't matter whose name the car is in. what the insurers need to know is who drives it.

it's fronting. try doing him his own policy with you as a named driver, nothing wrong with that.

like i said, do a search!

Try get a quote on this. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SUZUKI-ALTO-1-0-GL-3-DOOR-MANUAL-HATCHBACK_W0QQitemZ350004699538QQihZ022QQcategoryZ18283QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I'm not suggesting that he gets this type of car, just it will illustrate the difference in insurance cost based on the car being insured. I would hazard a guess the insurance quote will go down to £2000 or less (I would like to think closer to £1,500). Hopefully with a little time you'll find a good compromise between something he's happy to drive, and something that's cheap to insure. Once he's got his one years no claims, he can then get something a little nicer!

    thanks for that
just tried the insurance of that car with him as first driver and me as second
and still the quotes are coming in excess of £4000 (don't know why or what's wrong) and also tried putting me as a second driver on his policy only a £100 off.

    any suggestions

    there's your answer then!

try endsleigh - they're good for students, but the insurance will be very high because of location and his student status, being male and a new driver

    that's just how it is
