Hi all
DD1 will be 17 in July and is currently saving to buy her first car. She thinks she will have about £1000 to spend by then and really would love a black Ford Ka. We have no experience of this model and would appreciate any advice about this as a first car - or any other recommendations.
Also would appreciate any advice others have regarding pitfalls / recommendations for purchasing first car and insurance
I'd search the Web for insurance quotes first. You could find that they are more expensive than a £1000 car.0 -

I put in her details as though it was a year from know (so that she would be 17 with a provisional licence) and got a quote (including em as a named driver )TPFT for £760. I thoguht that was horrendous but apparently it's quite good :eek:0 -
Yeah that doesn't seem a bad quote. Do do as much shopping around and playing around with the quotes and cars as possible though to try get the price down, but don't lie of course0

try putting you on her policy as a named driver.perfectly legal to do this and it may reduce the quote.
personally speaking i can never get any insurance quotes any cheaper than elephant.co.uk offer me,this has been since i was 18 year old....work permit granted!0 -

Think I would rather she built up her own no-claims - and didn't lose me mine! We'll wait and see how close she gets to her savings target before I get too worried! The deal is she buys the car and we do the insurance - aren't we lovely parents0 -
You misunderstood add yourself to her insurance policy, she will get NCB but because the risk is reduced in the eyes of the insurance company they may reduce the premium0

My daughter bought her black Ford Ka in June (of course it has to have the colour coded bumpers as well). We had to spend a lot on it to get it running fine but the car hadn't been driven for nearly a year. She absolutely loves it. Passed her test first time at the beginning of October and now drives 40 mile round trip each day to and from college.
Insurance is in her name with both of her parents as named drivers. Was under £600 with Quinn Direct but do watch out as once she passed there was a lot more premium to pay (more of a risk when out unaccompanied).
Best to get a reasonably small car and not let her drive her mates around. A friend who runs a garage says that a big factor in accidents in the new drivers category is drivers who have several passengers and who don't realise that the car handles differently when fully loaded.0 -

well for boys their insurance is much much more expensive
as when i was checking for insurance for my son as second driver on my policy the cheapest quote i found was about £1350 (full comp though, tpft is only like a 250 cheaper)
is there anything wrong in me putting my son as second driver on my policy. because if i put him as first driver on his own policy it comes to over £4000 that horrendous.
any opinions.
btw i recommend you get a corsa or a ford ka as said for you daughter is a good car0 -
Note that her insurance will INCREASE when she has passed her test. A provisional driver is going to have another set of ears and eyes sitting next to her, a newly passed driver may not.
Get some insurance quotes for her with a full driving licence too.
Also, Fords seem to bring out high insurance quotes for me...no idea why.0 -
that's a really good quote

to do that on your son's car you would be committing an offence called 'fronting' (do a search on here - it's talked about every day).0
