help - newbie in need of advice re cookies!

Options
Not the chocolate chip ones

Hello, I couldn't decide where to post my question but thought the people lurking in this area would be best qualified to answer!

I've recently joined Quidco and have followed their advice in using a separate web browser (windows explorer) for the cookies to work or something. I normally use firefox for everything else.

However - what do I do if I want to join another cashback website?

Any responses gratefully received!

In Windows Internet Explorer aka IE Tools Menu >> Internet Options >> General Tab >> Delete cookies button.

That will get rid of any existing "referring" cookies, so you have the correct referals source for your new cashback site....

No doubt another 10 people have already answered while I tapped away... and recommended tools to download ... maybe not :rotfl: :rotfl:
    Rich people save then spend.
Poor people spend then save what's left.
  • Thank you!

    Couple more questions;-

How often do I need to clear the cookies?
If it's just a case of clearing cookies then why was I advised to use a separate web browser?

I would get into the habit of clearing the cookies at the end of each session of using IE. This way you start IE with a 'clean sheet' each time.

I work the other way round, and use Firefox as Quidco advise - FF has a simple ctrl+shift+delete keystroke combination to clear all the history, including cookies.

I was so neurotic about missing out on a Quidco payment that I used to keep a spare old laptop to use just for that.

The reason for the advice about a separate browser is that many people (me included) like to keep cookies so that we don't have to log in to all the forums and websites each time, websites use the cookies to be enable us to do that.

I use a neat little programe called CCLEANER, find it here www.ccleaner.com
It removes lots of rubbish from your hard drive, be careful how you set it up, but once you have it just takes a click and does everything automatically.
  • Oh I see :j

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain!

ccleaner deletes cookies, which presumably is the reverse of what you want for quidco?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Found this on Quidco;-

"Tracking your purchase back to Quidco is achieved by using cookies. If other tracking cookies already exist in your browser, your purchases may be attributed to another site and your commission will be passed onto them, rather than into your Quidco account. Sometimes merchants pay commission per cookie, so when repeating purchases it is also wise to clear your cookies.

Clear your cookies before making purchases through Quidco. If you do not want to clear your cookies, perhaps to maintain the state of another website which you regularly visit, we recommend using a separate browser."

I think this means that it's okay to leave the cookies if a separate web browser is being used just for Quidco? If I was to use another cashback site on the same wb, however, that's how I could potentially have problems. I might try to have two Windows Explorers, call one my Quidco and one named with another cashback site, and therefore keeping them separate will ensure all cashback is allocated correctly. This will give me three browsers; the third being my "everyday" browser.

I never normally clear cookies so this could be the best method of use for me!

    ccleaner deletes cookies,
Go into Options/Cookies, here you can select cookies to keep, by simply highlighting, then clicking the appropriate arrow.
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • Before you rush off and delete all your cookies, you should be aware that some of them are actually quite useful.

Here's a short article which explains the pros and cons; I'm sure there are lots of other places to look if you're interested.
