Bank charges

Options
I ama student and have incurred bank charges of £482 while using my card while over my overdraft. I was only £62 over my limit but my bank charges me £30 everytime I use my card. Some of the transactions were as little as £2.00, the most expensive was £15.00. My bank has a policy of only rejecting my card if you spend over £50 so therefore it was never rejected so I thought it was still ok to use it. Does anyone else think this is unfair, being charges £482 for only going £62 over my overdraft????

    Sorry Georgie,

It is your responsibility to manage your account well, and ensure that you do not go over your overdraft. You managed to make 14 transactions without checking your balance.

The bank has policies, and all would have been in the small print.

All I can say is learn from it..

Probably not what you wanted to hear

you could try their customer services and explain the situation and ask for a deal on the fines, if its ur first offence they make take pitty on you, i know lloyds did for me when i made a c0ck up once and went over and they refunded my charges but 14 transactions well i doubt they will do all of them. the best thing is to phone them up and if theirs no luck write to them and keep going up the chain. again if u hit a brick wall then you must learn from this, i for one always check my account at least once a day just incase something i have forgotten has put me in trouble

I wondered where the banks profits came from. People who can't even run a bank account properly and then complain about it.

    Priceless.

    Yeah,
I no this but what I want to know is if the bank can justify £30 per charge for such a small amount, especially with student facilities???

    Thanks

I've never been charged for an unauthorised overdraft. I've never been charged for going over a credit limit or for paying late.

I put that down to the way I was brought up.

Additionally, I check my account everyday so I know what is going on.

    Georgie,
A bank can justify anything that is it`s T& C`s upfront. You need to be aware of what they charge you. They charge these rates because they know people will go over their limits etc, and make money out of you.

    Willsnarf,

Dave is right in all honesty, The OP only has herself to blame.

Phone them - or go into a branch and visit - staff "tend" to be more accomodating face to face.

Smile, be nice and apologetic and ask if there can be a compromise - you are going to have to pay something for your mistake. Start the converstation "I have made a mistake and I really need your help" - it gives people a sense of power. Cant promise you that it will work, but all you have to lose is £482!

    And dont do it again!

Whilst I think the thank you system is poop - I love the fact those that say what you want to hear get one, and those that say the truth don't.

    Again, priceless.

debtbuster i was not denying that its the OP's fault but they have come here for help, not for people to mock them.
