I'm keen on this deal but not happy with the phone on offer. I would need a wheel barrow to carry it around!
My son was a customer of 3 last year and switched to Orange. He still has the 3 phone and I wondered if I was to order the Nokia 7600 and could I then switch the sim card to my son's phone? I could then sell the Nokia 7600. Is this possible?

Norman, yes that would work fine.

Would one be able to use the SIM in a bog standard SIM free phone or must it be a 3G phone ??

If it would work on any phone, best deal would be to take the contract, sell the phone and use the SIM in another phone.

    Short answer: no.

    Longer answer:
There are two main reasons why you can't do this -

    (1) Many 2G phones simply don't work with a USIM (what you effectively have with any 3 phone) inserted as they are designed to operate with GSM SIMs (what all 2G networks use). However, there have been reports that there are one or two models that do *seem* to work okay. However - be warned that messages sent between the phone and the USIM have, on occasion, done something nasty to the phone (as it hadn't expected to have to deal with such commands from the SIM) and effectively rendered it inoperable.

    (2) If you're lucky enough to have a handset that seems to work with the USIM (I believe there's an *old* list of handsets doing the rounds somewhere on the internet), 3 will find out about it and bar your SIM for the simple reason that it's against the T&Cs.

The reason 3 have deemd to make this illegal with their contracts is that your handset is unable to operate on the 3 network so all your calls will go via the O2 network which, at best, makes 3 far less money and at worst could be losing them money (they effectively rent the capacity off O2 to cover them in areas where their network isn't fully operational). I've been lead to believe that they know when you're using your USIM in a 2G phone because of the IMEI number that it transmits to the network whenever you make a call.

    Great deal!

Ordered mine yesterday over the phone - they had stock!

Didn't realise, but if you purchase through BigHair.co.uk you'll get a further £13 cashback. Can I refer a friend to e2save for this tip? ;)
  • I have a referrers link from e2save.

They give everyone who buys a phone from them one to encourage you to get friends to buy from them.

This gives a cashback from e2save of £20.

Anyone wanting to buy a phone from them can PM me for the details, and I will pass on £15 of the cashback to them. The remaining £5 will be passed on to MSE Martin to be donated to one of the Board's charities. (And of course, nothing for me).

This scheme gives the buyer the best possible "cashback", helps charity and is all at the expense of e2save!

i spoke to them about offering an alternative phone but they said that they are taking orders for the 7600 and expect a large shipment of these phones soon.
