Free router for Virgin media customers

For some months, Virgin have been making noises about providing all their broadband customers with a free wireless router. Anyway, I got fed up waiting for this and called their retentions people to ask what was happening. To my delight, I was told to buy myself any router up to the value of forty pounds, send them the receipt, and my account will be credited with the amount the router had cost me. And I didn't even have to haggle for this: she told me straight away that this was the policy.

She mentioned that routers can be ordered from their on-line store, and that they support the Netgear product, but the choice of supplier and brand is entirely up to me, subject only to the forty pound limit.

Quick bump so others who may have missed this can see it. I had heard about the free router rumours but this is not exactly what I expected.

I haven't got one but my understanding is that the original FREE router supplied by Virgin had a modified firmware which allowed only ONE pc to connect through it.

If this is true, it is a great offer, but it will mean renewing your 12 month contract.

If you were not thinking of leaving soon, go for it.

I may give them a ring even if it is just to flog it on.

They should be offering free routers to 4mbit and 20mbit customers.

I was on the wireless trial that finished just before Christmas, I already had a router, but joined anyway and got a free Netgear router and usb dongle (they had a PCI card and card slot version for a laptop).

When they will be offering routers for free I don't know, Telewest used to give free routers to those who agreed to stay for another 12 months and were on at least the mid package or upgraded.

The firmware was modified to only allow 2 wireless connections (maybe more, I forget), but you still have the 4 hard-wired connections.

You can't buy modems to use on cable - well you can, but VM does not authorise them to be used, only modems supplied by themselves.

Some of the modems VM have do have both Ethernet and USB connection and either can be used, as VM do not offer support on the USB connection as such and the modem isn't faulty they wouldn't replace it.

Are you 100% sure the inbuilt NIC is faulty?

As above you could buy a card to plug in if you have slots available.

Nothing on the website yet, but xTelewest customers got them if they phoned up and asked, they now have Virgin Media branded ones.


As posted above I was part of the wireless trial, I got to keep the wireless router, though I mainly use the wired side.

I am a cable customer, and I did not know that Virgin provided ADSL.

maybe its not adsl but if you ant get cable then your able to get another service via the phone line
