Thank you so much for all the comments - it's what I needed! I've given myself a good shake and I'm ready to get back onto the OS bandwagon. Defintely gonna get a slow cooker as well to try out some cheap cuts of meat (see if hubby can tell the difference).

All the regulars sound so organised though - and make it sound so easy being OS. I hope to one day be a bit like that! (and maybe had the odd day here and there slippage) :-)

The odd day here and there slippage is not only good for the soul, it's makes you feel doubly pleased when you get a proper OS week done!
  • Hi fellow weegie,
I work 4 days a week and its maybe taken me a year to get into a comfortable flow. I have a list of meals I know I can make and always have that on standby when planning my menue plan. I take cash with me to the supermarket and only go once a week. If I forget to get something or something runs out then too bad we do with out - this for me is the golden rule never broken (except by hubby to get a bottle of wine on a friday sometimes!) and it saves us a fortune in unplanned little extras. Written into my budget I have a set amount a week to spend on "bargains" (mostly reduced stuff) whish is frozen and then used as a basis for next week's meal plan. I have had my slow cooker for a year now and use it once a week. We had a beef casserole last night which even my 2 year old loved the meat was so tender abnd I have enough left over to make into a pie for friday (frozen pastry - I am a working mum after all!).
It can be hard starting off at the beginning when you are working but once you get into a regular routine it will hopefully just flow!

Please don't beat yourself up over this, as said before, we all slip off the waggon sometimes and I'm as guilty as the next person. The main thing is that you want to change and are willing to put in the effort to do so.

You'll get plenty of help from here so keep checking in for advice, support and a natter.

    Best wishes

Really, don't worry! There are days when I'm a disaster, or we go out for a meal as I can't be bothered to cook. All you need to remember is that anything you do manage to do saves you money! Just one time you do something MoneySaving you HAVE SAVED THAT MONEY! And pat yourself on the back!

I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...

I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!

katglasgow - nice to meet a fellow weegie on the board! I know what you mean about the unplanned extras - quite often my downfall. Pop up to the shops to grab some more milk and come back with more stuff.

I'm being good tonight though...using yellow stickered chicken that I demanded hubby take out the freezer this afternoon...going to have it with a sitr fry sauce which I know is the cupboard along with noodles and I have veg and chillies that need to be used.

tomorrow night - yellow stickered extra special mash and sausages from the butcher which are in the freezer with a nice onion gravy.

I'm going to make sure that other half doesn't talk me into a takeaway on Saturday night and make sure I make a homemade pizza instead (which to be honest is far more satisfying and doesn't make me feel as guilty)
  • i was so pleased to find this today - thank you!! I have not visited this site for a while and also had made such a good start but now everything seems to have gone to pot!! I think visiting daily kept me on the right track.
But i find it hard - i don't work full time or even part time but do have a 3 1/2 year old and 1 1/2 year old and everything always seems a mess. I do cook from scratch but that seems about it!
  • That's the spirit!
Before long your hubby will be telling you he likes your HM pizza better than the ones in the shop!
The thing I like about planning around the reduced items is we try all sorts of things we wouldnt buy otherwise - I have some venison steaks for next week!
    Enjoy your weekend x

I'm so glad to see this thread. Weegie thank you. I was feeling the same too and today just could not be bothered but feel different after reading this. I agree it is very difficult when working to cook from scratch but as someone pointed out much better for health and wallet. sometimes a break is good and will probably make us more determined to carry on OS.

delighted to say that after yesterday's kick up the backside from my fellow OS'rs I did indeed cook a meal from scratch last night. Also very impressed with myself that after my son complained about not having any treats I went and made a small batch of scotch pancakes (stole some inspiration from the cheap treats thread yesterday). And they tasted great!

    Cheers!
