Two days ago, whilst en route to Vodaphone shop to do an upgrade, I called in at Phones4u to browse. They told me that a phone I was interested in, K810 was no longer available and I could have the K850i free I'd just have to extend my contract. The V shop would have charged for this model. I agreed to take the free one.
Then came insurance pressure. I was led to believe that it was a requirement, despite me saying NO. The guy said he would speak to the manager, I said "will he give me the hard sell?", he said "problably".
On his return I was told the manager was going to GIVE me £20, this would pay my first two months rental after which I should pay another few months then cancel if I wanted. I really felt that to get out of the shop, I would have to do this, and agreed.
My debit card was requested by the manager, who took it to the back of the showroom, but as he did so, took out several bank cards from his pocket and then proceeded to complete the transaction. Why those other cards were needed I don't know. I tried to watch his every movement, but the salesman was voicing details that he felt I should know, almost to the point of distraction.
In the 36 hrs since I've had this phone, I have felt uncomfortable about how the sale took place. Today I have phoned the insurance company and cancelled the insurance to take effect as from now and a letter should follow stating as such.
Should I now visit my bank to tell them about this, ie as I've cancelled the Direct Debit for the monthly premium?
Also, in view of my feeling toward this sale, plus the keys of the K850i are not clear, you need to move the phone about to catch the light to be able to read the numerals, should I take it back and settle for the K800i, from V,even though it is old'ish but so similar to the one I wanted originally?

Just take the phone back and give them the £20 back.
You can cancel the contract within (I think) 14 days. I took a phone back and cancelled the contract with Phones4u a while back. They will try to convince you to keep it etc. but just insist on cancelling it and you'll be fine.0 -
Update
Rang Phones4u customer service. They said the phone is mine to do with as I please, even remove my old sim card and put it back in my old phone, but preferably they would like me to choose another phone from them.
Rang Vodafone customer service, According to their records, Phone4u haven't extended my vodafone contract for another 18 months. I told them that maybe it hasn't gone through yet and she said this is normally done automatically but there's nothing on screen. V said, even if they DO insist they've extended the contract, I can still cancel it. Then I can walk back into the Vodafone shop and extend and upgrade in there. If I encounter any problems with phone4u, I've been given contact names/numbers for them to speak with V, via 191.
So, my aim is to call into the bank to confirm cancellation of DD for ins, then to phones4u then the V shop.
This soddin stress. Hopefully others will benefit from all my ramblings. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Further update
Bank confirm no DD has been introduced.
Phones4u staff all different today, unhappy. They spoke to Head Office who asked if they could have time to listen to the conversation they had recorded when I rang earlier. I was told to keep the phone SE K850i, sell it on ebay or wherever then use the cash to buy (from them) the K800i. I informed them that I'd cancelled the DD and that I was unhappy with pressure to take out Ins or the Debit card transaction. I asked what they would gain out of this, they said "keeping you as a customer", der!. I left with a phone I don't want.
Vodafone are to get me a K800i hopefully for tomorrow, it will be free and they know I don't want insurance.
So both companies appear to be losing out, or have I missed something?.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
