Oh yes and he also moans if anyone parks in 'his' space on the road out the front of his (the passat space) even though its the pulics highway.

Park in "his" space. Just explain to him that you have a permit to park there. When he asks, point to the little round paper disc in your windscreen - you know, the one you have to buy every year..... ;)
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Parking on double yellows and blocking driveways/pavements is illegal, call the police.

Mind you the police wouldn't come out to me when a drunk was banging on my door at 10pm for half an hour saying he lived there and wanted to come in - so I don;t hold out much hope they'll investigate double yellow parking quickly.

Maybe brief the local traffic warden?

And the drunk? Police rang me half hour after I'd rung and asked me to go outside to check he'd gone !!!!!

I always park legally, somedays I just have to walk further.
But the sheer amount of people who park on yellow lines & the pavement local to where I work, astounds me.
A few firms share a large building & so lots of competition for spaces.

It annoys me the way they park, it must drive the residents mad.

I have thought about complaining (its the cars parked on pavements that annoys me most).

But (& this is purely selfish) if they didn't park illegally, I don't know where I would get legal parking.
One half of the road parks legally & on the other side because its narrow they all park half on the pavement!

Are you sure its down to the Police many councils took responsibility for parking from them over recent years mine does and they are far more stricter than Police ever did

In fact fines are going up to £70 from April and quick payers from £30 to £40

    Old joke:

Guy wakes up in the middle of the night hearing noises coming from outside his house. He grabs his phone and pulls it under the duvet and calls 999, telling them that he thinks someone is trying to break into his house. Operator tells him they're very busy and it'll be at least an hour before anyone can get there, telling him to stay upstairs in his bedroom or lock himself in a bathroom. He tells the operator it's okay, he's got a shotgun and he'll go deal with it himself and hangs up.

5 minutes later flashing blue lights come roaring up to his house and they catch two would-be burglars trying to get into his house. Angry sergeant finds the home owner in his dressing gown making a cup of tea and asks him where the shotgun is.

"I don't have a shotgun." says the homeowner.

"I thought you said you had a shotgun" says the sergeant.

"Really? I though you said you'd be at least an hour" says the homeowner :)

Is it fair he does this? no, but is it legal for him to do it - probab-bloody-dy....!!

No, it's not fair, people take liberties if they can get away with it.

You need to stand up for yourself, catch him when he's parked outside & make a few comments. It's an awkward situation, as you don't want to upset neighbours & most people want to avoid confrontation or arguments.

I have similiar neighbours who have a drive with 2 cars, then park a 3rd car they use once a week outside a neighbour the whole week, when there are spaces at end of road they could use.

Another neighbour has a drive he rarely uses, parks his car in bay outside his house, doesn't like anyone else using it, then happily uses bay outside my house occasionally.

""trying to carry shopping, a buggy and small children from a busy road into your nice quiet cul-de-sac"" - people who dont have cars do this every day ..............

Thats my point - and if the bus they were on had to stop much further down the road every day because a car was parked in the bus stop I am sure these people would complain about it (nobody shout about bus stops being non parking, i know this am just saying people DELIBERATELY parking to be annoying is a pain). Again I would like to point out I understand people can legally park where they want - my problem was neighbour's visitor was parking outside our house to be an !!! when loads of space directly outside house he was visiting so we spent money getting another drive put in and then he proceeded to park there still and BLOCK the drive - if we needed car for emergency or appointment or even if we just wanted to use car we'd have to ask him to move from blocking our drive and risk getting another mouthful or wait for him to move - again when there are spaces outside his house and room for loads more at the side of his house - when he parks in front of ours he cant see his car clearly and its further from his house then all the other spaces including the ones for that house. We are on dual carriageway with houses only on one side with parking down the entire length of the road - all houses have at least one driveway for 1 or 2 cars and room for 2 or 3 outside every one on street. If there were limited spaces and he parked in front of my house NOT blocking drive I fully understand - as said before first come first served but he does have spaces - loads of em - he's deliberately blocking drive to !!!! us off.

Also I dont have the kids and shopping etc I was saying that I can understand from other peoples point of view how frustrating it could be. Just pointing out that far from "limited spaces so grab most convenient to your house etc" which we all do and I understand why, but some people deliberately block drives or take other spaces to be annoying - gives them some pleasure in their warped twisted lives. There the people I have a problem with - not normal people trying to park as conveniently as possible - heck I do that too, I just dont block others drives etc.

People can park where they want as long as it's legal. I have had to park further away with buggy and shopping and children. It was far more difficult when i had to catch the bus. It's just a fact of life. You are expecting everyone to think of you and put your needs first, you call it being considerate. It is a fact of life that we all put our own needs first, even when we think that we are selfless. We expect people to read our minds, and know that their parking has been inconsiderate to us. We all want to walk less to our houses. Just accept the first come, first served rule and life will feel much easier. You have no more rights to public space than they do, that is the law i'm afraid. If i get the space in front of my house then fine, if i don't it's just tough. Even if there were a number of other parking spaces that other person could have parked in. I can assure you it would still annoy you if parking was tight.

Yes thats why we paid a small fortune to get permission etc to build a new drive so hubbys car would be on our land and now this guy blocks our drive! We have a drive for hubbys car on left, drive on right hand side for me and a chunk in the middle with nothing where the git could park in front of our house (as that seems to be his preference) WITHOUT blocking any of the drives but he deliverately does not park in neighbours drive (they dont have car anymore) or in front of their house or in the section in front of our house thats not drive BUT he chooses to park blocking one of our drives ALL THE TIME - not just occassionaly but everytime he goes there now. I realise I can get police to move him etc but they take ages to arrive and to be honest the bloke (and his mate) scare the living daylights out of us - they are just parking there to be awkward - no space limitation, no reason or method in it - purely to be gits. I am sure if we managed to park our car three streets away in an alley he would park in the front of it to block us - again THATS the people I am complaining about NOT normal parkers who take up free spaces.

I'd recommend the OP writes to the council. Upon getting a letter back, photocopy the header, footer, and signature onto a new piece of paper with your own letter addressed to the problem neighbour warning him that he will be in danger of an ASBO if he continues to be so inconsiderate towards his local community. :)

    (do ASBOs still exist?)

Sneaky, good thinking, could come in useful for all manner of things.

ASBOs still exist, no doubt they'll be renamed/rebranded as they're not in news anymore, so no good for government publicity, me cynic or what !!

    Here's some in Bury:
