Does 6 months of calling them pleading with them to take it back constitute a big enough effort?0

That's your experience - you know full well I'm referring to the OP.
I'd actually go to the lengths of contacting the police to make them aware, then your back is covered if you are accused in the future.0 -

But then, you know full well I was only joking. Even though I didn't add a smiley.0 -
I used to work in a building society. Occasionally a mistake would be made and money added to the wrong persons account. If it was a large amount typically the beneficiary would quickly take the money and close the account. It never worked - the building society had a legal right to the money and it never let people off, even if they had spent it. They also always tracked down where the money went, it's not hard to do as they keep careful paper (well computer) trails.
So do NOT spend the money. However what you can do is put it in an interest bearing account. The longer it takes them to ask for it back the more you will earn. In theory they might ask for the interest too but in practice they are generally satisfied with the capital.0 -
thanks to everyone who has replied.
I will contact the bank to let them know their error.
I never envisaged being able to keep the money as it was never mine in the
first place.0 -

Yes, but it would have been nice"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0
