in Credit cards
i have a credit card which i rarely use. I have noticed that i am somehow £5000 in credit!!!!!!!!
I first noticed it on my last monthly statement, however I just this month's statement and it still shows me as £5k in credit.
I know its not the balance available as this shown at the top of the statement and is a different amount anyway. In the transaction summary it say £5k in credit.
What do I do?

First thing I'd do is take a look at all of my statements to try to work out where the £5k has come from. Other than that I'd call the CC company and ask some carefully worded questions.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

Firstly, you need to double check whether it is yours or not. Have you BT'd from another card and not remembered? You need to go through your statements to find out at what date this was credited.
Next, if it's not yours for sure ....then don't spend it! The credit card company will find it (I can assure you). If you can't find out where it's come from, you'd be best to call them and ask to query it.
You may think that you've been blessed with a nice gift of £5k, but to be honest, it's more of a headache than it's worth, as they will want it back."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -

Not necessarily true! The same happened to me, with a smaller amount which was magically credited to my credit card account. I called them, told them it wasn't mine, and they said they would investigate. Next month it was still there, so I called again: same answer. This went on for six consecutive months. Believe me, I tried very hard to give the money back, but they just wouldn't take it.
It was still there when I closed the account, so I gave some to charity and kept some as payment for my time and effort.
I reckon (and told the card company) that someone might have made a payment and quoted the wrong card number, so it appeared on mine instead. And that person must have been one of those who doesn't check their statements.
With £5K though, I think someone will notice and it will be tracked down. Not many people can lose £5K without noticing. FWIW, it's such a round figure it sounds like someone has BT-ed from your card instead of theirs. Eventually they will ask their new card company "why hasn't that BT you did appeared on my old card yet", the new card company will say "it should have done - here's where it went", and all will be revealed.0 -

I have had BT's go AWOL onto other peoples cards - one for 8k with Lloydstsb. Only the very rich won't notice 5k it is too larger sum to go unnoticed. I think you can be assured it will go back to it's rightful owner.0 -
Does anyone know the law on this if you close the account and try to keep the money - I have a feeling the bank has up to 2 years from the transaction date to reclaim but don't know why I think this.I think....0

Under the Limitations Act, it's gonna be 6 years they have to reclaim.....I haven't been asked to tell you that I'm the Board Drunk for this board. As the night wears on, my posts will become worse, with simple spelling mistakes, inane ramblings, and a blatant disregard for the truth. I have no authority to do anything, so there's no point asking or telling me. If you see me past midnight, please tell me to get my coat and order me a taxi.

Sounds like an excuse for a very long holiday in Brazil.
Jokingt best bet is to try and get onto them.
Complain that there's been a mistake and your statement should say 10k.0 -
I'd have thought this could be classed as theft, or at least deception as you know it not to be yours (if you keep it and then get chased for it).
You must make a big effort to clear this up as legally you wouldn't have a leg to stand on - as has been said this money will bite you on the backside at some point.0
