Erm - what about buying him a small olive tree he can grow himself.... They're pretty hardy things....

Or you can get one for a year for 49euros here, which is about 30quid (sorry, a little over budget)

Or what about contacting this guy and seeing if you can 'adopt' one of his trees - you could even go and visit it!

Thanks Travelqueen! I've bookmarked the nursery page as a back-up plan. The trouble is I'd have liked him to have the olive oil without having to produce it himself or cost me a fortune. I think being able to use the oil in cooking would be the main appeal for him really.0

OK
Another options - sticking with the olive oil theme....
Get some pretty bottles from a charity shop & some extra virgin oil from the supermarket.
You can then make him some flavoured oils - sprigs of rosemary for eg (ask a neighbour if they have a rosemary bush you can take some fronds from), chilli oil by putting in small chillis etc etc. Get some ideas from the fancy oils you see and then make your own - you then have the personalised present you were looking for. You can cork them with cut down bottle corks seal with wax.
And, I have now found a cheaper olive plant, so you could joke that you made it from scratch with your fair hand!

Also, I bought on ebay (but you can probably find cheaper in a cookery shop for e.g.) an oil drizzler that he can feel truly professional using.
Hope that helps, and I think I might try and find someone who would appreciate the same present! One day everything I earn will be mine and not the banks... ::rotfl:0
