Washing Machine problem - feel like screaming

posted this on family forum and suggested to send here.

Here goes.

Put a load in the machine yesterday , washed but didn't spin. great. Left it for a bit. Empty it then put a tiny amount in and it did spin. Left it overnight and tried again this morning. No luck, garments just sat in the drum and not moving.

Hubby seems to think its had it's day and get a new one. Lot of money though. Having to lug all washing to my mums until we sort out what where gonna do. No point in calling engineer as this plus a part your talking you could buy a new one.

Any parts or hubby can do.?? gutted if i have to buy a new one. although the machine is nearly10 years old you wouldn't think so.

anyhelp would be great.

thanks all

How about posting the details of the machine? Brand, model number etc.? There are ex-service engineers on here who might recognise the problem.

Hello, Sorry to hear about the washing machine problems... I can't help with fixing the machine however, if you have to buy a new one, have a look at the Comet Clearance website: www.clearance-comet.co.uk It's a website that has been mentioned loads on this website and it fantastic for end of line. It works like an auction and tells you any damage the machine may have (ie: a dent to the left, etc). I would recommend the stuff that is unused or ex-display. We bought all of our appliances here when we bought our first house and they are all perfect, apart from the odd dent that you can't see because it's between two units! Hope this helps a bit. xx

    Hi

Not sure if I imagined it but I thought I posted on this?!?

My comment was ...... 10 years old ...maybe the motor brushes.
I also posted a link to a web site. There is no connection between me and the web site or it's owners. I won't bother again though.

Washing machines won't spin if the drum is out of balance. Does the drum of the washing machine feel abnormally loose relative to the body of the machine? Has it been previously making more noise than usual on spin?
If could be as simple as needing a new drive belt (belt that joins the back of the drum to a spindle on the motor's drive shaft). The belt may have perished and started to stretch, which could put the drum off balance. If it's that then it's pretty straighforward and cheap to DIY fit a new belt (secret is to hook belt over drive shaft spindle, tie the belt to top of drum and turn by hand). Happened to our machine a few years ago though ours got to the point where the material backing on the belt frayed and tied itself up in the mechanics.

thanks for this andy. As soon as my hubby has finished out of the shower I will pass this onto. Well he can actually read for himself.

You've all been great. I can really do without splashing out as we also had the phone bill in this week. Comes in 3 's as they say.

There is a bearing or brushes wearing or something similar that goes and means the drum won't spin.

This happened to my last washing machine and it can be easily fixed.
(I called someone out), but you can fix it yourself if you can tell the diy place the model details etc

join your local free recycle site and post wtd a washing machine, there is usually quite afew on mine and doesnt cost anything on those sites. then you can also post your washing machine even if it is broken as people pick them up who can fix them.
