Peugeot gear box is clunky - water???

I drove through a flood today (possibly deeper than I thought) and since that I seem to have A BIT of trouble changing gears. I might be imagining it but does anyone know if I could have done some damage? And if so what should I do about it?

  • very much doubt it.
for piece of mind though you could get the gear oil checked.
i find the 206 gearbox very loose and clunky at the best of times

Is it the gearbox or the clutch that is causing the proble? Some models of Peugeot have an exposed clutch cable, it may be the lubricant has been washed of the cable, making it stiff to operate.

Peugeots are known for bad gearboxes - my 306 has just had a new one (well, the garage I part ex'd it to has put a new one in).

As suggested, perhaps check/change the gearbox oil.

I'm not having any problems with the clutch, it must be the gear box as occasionally it goes to pop out of gear when I've put it in.

    Thanks everyone for your advice!!!
  • the girlfriends 206 was doing this, the gear lever felt as if you were stirring poridge with it even when in gear.
this week she had a bit of an accident in it,it went to the garage and she got it back tonight she says the gear box feels like new again.
i dont know what they have done to it but im guessing there was maybe a loose linkage or this has a cable type linkage and has been adjusted up.
maybe someone with more knowledge of the 206 gearbox could help us here?
i may be under her car at the weekend so i will let you know what i find.

Popping out of gear is usually a sign of worn cogs within the gearbox. What mileage is on the car?

About 75,000 I think. But I just thought it was strange that its been difficult to put into gear since I went through the floods...

    Thanks Nail_Lad.
  • Hi bluejosiah!!

How are you? See? Here I am replying to your post!!lol

In addition to people's help and advice above, I would recommend posting your problem on www.frenchcarforum.co.uk as it is more likely you will get a more advice from somebody who might have had the same problem before with the same car.

    Good luck! ;)

  • Cluncky changes and jumping out of gear was the first signs that my Saab's gearbox was about to die, this happened a couple of weeks before it finally gave up and had to be replaced. The reason my gearbox failed was that a level plug wasn't replaced during a service (before we owned it) and it had been slowly loosing oil before it finally seazed.

My advice would be to get the gearbox oil checked immediately.
