in Credit cards
Hi all
We are in the postion of sorting out our debts and paying off my husband credit cards.
Basically, hubby never even looks at his statement when it comes in ... I use the online banking system to pay my hubbys credit cards, I never really look at the statement its self, which is where we have gone wrong, and pay the min or just over the min payment, write down on statement when i paid, and date for ref. And put statment in the drawer.
However, yesterday i did take a look as i was adding up what the total and i notice the there was a large sum for payment protection charges, i questioned my hubby about it, as he never takes out any payment protection or extended warrantys and said said he never asked for it, or has ever signed for it to be added either.
Tonight he has called Barclaycard about this, and they are looking into it for him. He has held a card with them since 1991 and according to the girl it was added on back in 2004 !! And they have refunded the last 3 months,a nd frozen all interest on the balance for the next month so it can be looked it.
I'm glad i found this before we paid of the debt, however it just goes to show you that you must check statements.
Hopefully, everything will get sorted out soon. And we will fight this if thats not the case.
But has anyone elese had this problem ? If so did you get it sorted out ?
kindest regards

Normally for the PPI you get confirmation with this as well as terms and conditions for what they will and not will payout for in the event of a claim, also they normally say that you can cacel within the first 30 days and not be charged anything or have your first payment refunded, but depending on the company it states like it does for my MBNA card that you can cancel PPI at any time but will not get a pro rat refund, so good luck with it from barclaycard. Alas I did cancel my MBNA within 30 days
as I said I would have it so they wouldnt try and sell me with when they called me up to welcome me, then I cancelled st8 away, but let us know how you get on, 0 -
They normally add it without even asking you. It's a clever con as it's almost pure profit for the credit card company.Krusty & Phil Madoff, 1990 - 2007:

Hi
We keep all the old statements etc, and ive been through the paperwork, hubby has never signed any agreement for this, even when he had the card to start with back in 1991. Barclaycard says it looks like it was added in 2004. But he knows nothing about it, sadly he hates opening his post and seeing the balance so it was me who was making payments,a nd i never looked at the statement to see what was what, until monday !! Wished I had seen sooner and asked hubby about it sooner.
My hubby stayed very calm and polite on the call to Barclaycard , although he is angry, as the lady he spoke to was very helpful and took her time to sort it out whilst he was on the call, and she looked up his agreement and saw that he had not signed for this payment protection on this at the time, hence how we know the year he was given the card, so they are now looking into this and will be in contact.. How long this willl take we are not sure, but he will ring them again in a weeks time, to see whats happening, and of course I will update you on the out come if and when we have one.
regards

you don't have to sign anything, they just add it when you're on the phone and they say you agreed to it. You can't really prove otherwise unless you record all your phone calls.Krusty & Phil Madoff, 1990 - 2007:

They have done the same to me, I never asked for it either, in fact I told them on the phone that I didn't want it! I wasn't interested in it0 -
I had this happen - I was called by them and I said I didn't want it to the oik - lo and behold he put it on anyway. It took three months to get it stopped completely and the money back but it was resolved. I never received any paperwork and the only reason I realised it was on the card was that I was not spending on the card at the time and suddenly had a charge!
Once it was resolved I cancelled. A friend of mine who works in finanacial services said it's very common for call centre staff to add PPI even when told no as they often still get their commission even if the customer goes on to cancel!I'm so sexy it's a wonder my underpants don't explode.0 -
Hi All,
Well, just thought I'd give an little update on my hubby's problem of barclaycard adding ppi to his account, we are slowly moving forward with the f.obidsman now.
We provided the f/o with completed forms, a letter (using same format of martins template to guide us) along with copies of our letters and Barclaycards letters, we also sent a photocopy of my husbands passport, proving we were in Turkey at the time this PPI was added.
After, phonecalls to Barclaycard, and receiving back a final response letter (1st letter received from barclaycard) and then a 2nd letter stating they had no proof of him signing anything or agreeing to it over the phone, ( he never had signed anything we reminded them or agreed to it over the phone either ) Barclaycard the said that any proof was only kept for 6 years, we even kindly pointed out they told us ppi was added 4years ago in sept 1994 , and we were in Turkey on our family holiday at the time so we questioned who, and how this could be added, then at one stage in the call the advisor suggested he (hubby) added the ppi on to his account whilst we were on holiday... hmm we then asked the advisor if he did things like that whilst on holiday, why would he think of adding that whilst in Turkey on a family holiday ? Hmmmmmmm, who on earth takes bills with them on holiday to sort out...?
Anyway, we received a letter from the f/o about 2 weeks later after sending our docs into them, saying that they received our paperwork, and stating that an advsior would assigned to our case, we would hear from them, approx time 4 weeks, well we left it 6 weeks and called them, to see if anyone was now able to look at our case. They replied that they have been in contact with Braclaycard now.... so thats as far as we have got so far.
Doesnt seem a big leap forward, but like I said earlier we are moving forward in the process with the f/o....... not sure what will happen next or when.
Has anyone else had this happen, if so did you take it futher and what happened/ how long did it take to finally get sorted ?
regards

It's never happened to me or my wife and we've had dozens of cards over the years. The problem would have been nipped in the bud if the OP (or her OH) had taken the time to check the statements.it's very common for call centre staff to add PPI even when told no as they often still get their commission even if the customer goes on to cancel!0 -
Some companies (Egg in my case) phoned me up a few years ago offering FREE PPI for 3 months I think. They were aghast that I turned them down as they kept repeating it's FREE!!
I made it quite clear that I was not interested in any way and that they could stay on the line and speak to themselves if they wanted but I was going to put the receiver down until they ended the call.
Never heard from them again and no premiums were ever debited to my card.
Reason I'm saying this is that they would not have ''just put it on without his knowledge'' either he has been phoned and agreed to it (without realising perhaps?) or he's ticked a box or signed something.
IMO it probably was a phone call.0 -
Hi
Thanks for the replies.........
I forgot to add that my hubby has actually had the same barclaycard since 1991 and never had ppi on this before , and also had the barclaycard mastercard since time time and never ppi on this card either......
He never has ever taken any insurance on anything including prevoius barclay Bank loans, nationwide etc, it's not something he has ever felt he needed. He certainly has never signed for it to be added, and like I said in my posting earlier, Barclaycard themselves have said they have no proof, as we asked them to provide us with the proof of a signature or a call aggrement, the only thing they can tell us it was added on sept 19th 2004, like i said we were in Turkey from the sept 16th 2004 for 2 weeks....... For which we have proof on his passport, cos to enter Turkey you pay for a visa, and passport gets stamped. And have provided this proof to the f/o.
Only thing we can think of is that they tried calling, couldnt get him, and added on it anyway.........
As for Barclaycard calling him, its normally me that answer calls from Barclaycard on our land line phone, and I say he's not at home , he's a work, but i offer to give them his mobile no, so they can speak to him and they say they can only call card holder on the tel no that is showing on their system, so they have never actually got to speak to him. They ask the best time to call back, and I cant tell them, cos my hubby is a floor layer/specialist and works long hours with early starts and late finishes 6-7 days a week. And I explain that to them.......
Also, yes he should of checked his statements, trouble is when statements through I used to tell him they arrived,a nd he said can you pay the min , which i used to do via the online banking we use..... I never actually looked at what was on the statements itself..... Which was silly really, but like I said this only came to light when I was going to pay off the whole balance, and beings the card were used to buy diy materials for the house we had moved into which needing gutting, I didnt feel the need to check what was on the card.........
Also we first contacted Barclaycard immedaitely after finding this on the statment, they did refund the last 3 months, and got it removed straightaway.
