Slow dial up access

I have fast4 dial up service. I cannot get broadband. I can only connect at a maximum speed of 45 kb/s from my home phone. I have a laptop and if I go to someone elses house I can get up to 115kb/s. I believe BT has done something to my line. Anybody know what and what, if anything, I can do about it?

Best thing is to phone BT and get them to check your line. Have they given you a reason for not getting broadband or is it coming soon?0

I believe broadband is coming soon. I don't live in a big city like you, just a tiny wee island. it takes years to get anything here. One day we may even get CH5 on tv maybe even freeview. Poor us. Seriously I have heard that BT can do something to your line to share it or something and before I contact them i would like to have the correct amnunitionSomething Really Interesting0

In fact I don't live in the City but very much on the outskirts and prior to us getting broadband last year I discovered that quite a few of the lines had been split.
I had to phone BT to do something about this and at the time discovered from my neighbour that he also had very slow dial up internet access compared to his friend using the same pc via the same supplier not too far away. This neighbour and my phone line had once, many years ago been party lines so I suggested to him to phone BT and find out if his line was a split line too, they call it something like dak (sp) as this could cause the speed problem.0 -
If it's a 56K modem them 45kbps is about average. It's roughly what I get although sometimes I get 48kbps. Those are the expected speeds. 56kb is only a theoretical maximum in laboratory conditions or if you live very close to the exchange you might get near to 56kb but the difference woudn't be that noticeable.
115kbps on a dialup modem is not the connection speed even though it is stated as such. This sometimes happens when your modem doesn't communicate well with the server side modems, sometimes because the modem drivers are old on either side or some other problem, so the modem gives a default type connection speed, but it does not mean it is connected at that speed. It's actually the PC port speed.
When you are on a shared line (DACS) modem speeds tend to drop to 33.6kbps or less.0 -
