I spoke to head office waitrose who emailed me :
"Cashiers may accept suppliers' coupons for any product which we sell, whether or not the customer is purchasing the item for which the coupon was issued. Cashiers may accept any quantity of coupons provided the coupons are valid."
I phoned up my nearest Waitrose and spoke to their welcome desk/customer services who immediately confirmed with no dilly dallying (none of this "Oh I hadn't heard we did that, let me go and check" or "oh I thought it was one coupon and 10%") that this was the case and even went to check on the shelves if they stocked one of the items I had a lot of coupons for. When I got to the store I went and asked again (didn't want to do a huge shop and then have to pay for it all) and she said yes that's the case and asked if I had a lot of coupons. I said yes, but I won't use them all in one go, is that a problem? She said No, as long as we sell the actual product. The cashier accepted them with no problem, only asking a collegue for confirmation that they sold the product and it was alright to accept the coupons. They were all extremely polite and helpful, I got £70 off of my shopping and the cashier remarked "so we're not limited to 10% like we used to be then!". The only thing is that they don't scan any of the coupons as their systems aren't set up to deal with them, so the cashier checks individually that they stock the item and then manually adds the coupons up and inputs them. Its a lot slower but I wasn't complaining.
The food was very good quality - none of the meat on the shelves even looked off colour, the reductions were great - they were reducing a day before the use by date so the food still looked in good condition - 50% off in most cases. It was more expensive overall - probably 10% or so, but with coupons, well worth it. I enjoyed the choice of different higher quality goods but they didn't have many BOGOF or value goods for sale at all. So I would always check at Customer Services in the store before doing a shop that their policy hadn't changed because i would definately not like to be at the checkout and have to pay for the whole bill with no coupons.0 -
MY Tesco is being good at the moment. I've only being doing smalll shops, max of £15 but Ive managed to get about half my bill each time, including £2 off a £5 shop. I only buy what I need, I dont bulk up the shop with luxuries or things I would not normally buy, so every coupon off is a bonus.
I would only bulk up a small shop with things I actually do need all the time eg cat food, loo paper, apples, sliced bread for sandwiches etc. I also bought two Fitness cereal boxes today because it was BOGOF and also each box had a £3 coupon on so actually I make a profit on these when I redeem them.
(Oddly the coke and pizza which I bought form Sainsburys last week because it was BOGOF, is now BOGOF in Tesco this week so that has saved me having to go to Sainsburys!)
Tesco also sorted lunch for me today, a bag of salad leaves for 25p!

This isn't that odd...its rather common actually. Must be due to a manufacturer's promo.0 -
The staff at my local Tesco are great. In the begining they did query printed vouchers but were very polite and apologised for keeping me waiting while they checked with the supervisor. It doesn't happen so much nowadays cos I stick to the same 3 cashiers who know me. If I get a newbie and she has to ring for the supervisor I just wave as she aproaches and she thumbs up the cashier to accept them. This happy state of affairs has taken a number of years cultivating the store and staff tho!
Paying large amounts of your grocery bill with coupons is still relatively new and only done by a few in the UK and it will take time for the culture to change. In the states it is perfectly normal to coupon clip and shoppers and stores treat them as cash.Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0 -
My Friend was in charge of the self scans again at Tesco and my £2.40 voucher for Harpers & Queen went through fine.

I did a Saturday bag packing with guides at a very large, busy Sainsburys near Manchester, working lots of tills. I dont think I saw one coupon produced as part payment for a bill at any till all day!

CrazyChemist - threads on this part of the forum are the best places to watch - i.e. I posted for the last 3 days about the Times having £2.40 coupon in it - at the cost of 55p for the paper - profit!! Best to check in the morning so if it is a daily paper rather than a weekly magazine, someone who happens to get it delivered will post it, and you can know to pick it up that day.0

 i tried the self scan till today for the first time after reading on here that they accept the somerfield coupons. little did i know that i was being watched. do they always have someone near the tills ? even though the coupons scanned and came off the bill "she" said we don't take these and opened up the till gave them back to me - after i held out my hand to signal this - and then voided them off the bill!
i had spent £25 in shopping and tried to use £5 of coupons.
can anyone make a suggestion?
does anyone know how the traffic light above the till works? do you scan your coupons quickly pay and go before they can void you?0 -
Just back from Asda in Beckton and hurrah they took about £4 in vouchers from £12 spend only bought 4 items. So 1/3 off although the cashier did ask a supervisor who checked in the office (the customer service desk has defiantly refused before so maybe better to ask store managers not silly sausages at customer service who can't be bothered to check and simply state 'no' as if they know all policies better than management - TIP catch a manager whilst in store if you can and make a note of name) - finally got my zing mag vouchers accepted.
I said I had more vouchers after 3 were approved and they said fine but guy at the till thought he couldn't take too many. I agreed still as something is much better than nowt.0
