Tesco Coupon Policy

I emailed tesco to ask whether individual stores could override national policy. I can't find the thread I was replying on yesterday so I assume it's been deleted?

Anyway I emailed them to ask about whether stores can override the national policy. This is the useless "template" reply:
Thank you for your reply.

As my colleague has stated we accept one coupon even if you have not purchased the product.

However, the coupon must be in date and Tesco must sell the item. If you present more than one identical coupon, then you must purchase the same number of

products.

I hope this clears the confusion.

Useless. So they only accept one coupon?? I used 4 yesterday! Some of you have used more than 10! Someone help me!

They mean one coupon of each type - hence the "if you present more than one identical coupon..."

But local managers do have some powers to limit abuse of the system.
Some only allow a maximum of 5 to be used, some limit it to 10% of the total bill.
It is obvious, to all but the most shortsighted, greedy and selfish individuals that if more and more individuals, regularly pay their total bill with vouchers alone and no cash at all, they will eventually upset the voucher providers. The more common sense, and restraint, is shown the longer the majority will benefit.

A kind person sent me some 25p coupons for nairn oatcakes which expire June 30th. I had 6 coupons so I checked with the till supervisor and she said it was OK to use two coupons each as I was purchasing the product.

(50p off 63p biscuits seemed OK to me, sometimes you have to use lateral thinking)

So along with a few bits of shopping I went through the till, deliberatley choosing a jobsworth. I told her that I had checked with the till supervisor and that it was OK to use 6 money off coupons worht 25p each, with 3 packs of biscuits. She still had to check with the till supervisor because the coupons were worth more than 10% of the bill but I managed to also get another 25p accepted , another going out of date coupon.

Very satisfying making her life difficult. The supervisors must get sick of these cashiers as well that need everything double checking. I am sure they prefer cashiers that just on with the job quickly without mithering them all the time.

I think that was a victory for me but I cant show my face in Tesco during the day or on Sunday for another week LOL

My tescos say point-blank 'you must buy the product'. I am so annoyed at supermarkets not sticking to their policies. Next time I am going to make the biggest fuss.
  • I used £10 worth of coupons (13 coupons in total) on a £23.72 shop in Tesco's. I've got a £10 Pampers coupon & don't EVER spend £100 (I.E 10%) so hoping they will take that one ok, usually only spend around £20-£30 a week at the most.

I would hang onto the £10 pampers voucher until you find a store that has a good deal on pampers. Seem to think Boots have a deal on at the moment. You want a BOGOF offer or spend x ammount and get points or buy 2 save £x.
Try fixureferret or check the Boots website etc. Has it got a long expiry date?

Or if you dont want to buy pampers but would rather another brand, buy a pack anyway amongstyour other shopping, generally during a busy weekend with a student on the till. Take your pack to the customer service desk and say you have just realised you have picked up the wrong brand. They should refund the pampers and you can then pay for the ones you do need at the cs till.

    Anyway just a thought.

This is part of my problem, that I dont do big shops very often. We must have 20 supermarkets around here within a 30 minite drive and our nearest is only 2 miles away. So I replace what we have used in the store cupboard, fridge and freezer, get fresh fruit, veg and bread and plan the main meals for a few days ahead. So at the most I spend £20 at a time.

I also cherry pick whatever is on offer at whatever store, its quite easy for us to buy yoghurt from one store, coke from another, apples from another...

I have NO problem with Tescos/Asda etc.. having coupon policies about 10% shop, only 1 coupon, no internet coupons, have to buy the product in question. I view it as brilliant that they let us get moneyoff our shop AT ALL.

What I do have a problem with though, is being informed as a customer by Head Office or Customer Services that the policy is one thing, then being told otherwise in store. I shop according to what the total is going to be and if I have £10 worth of coupons then that adds £10 to my budget. I think it is terrible service to make customers feel embarissed, as if they are being cheeky/rude/thieving/stupid etc...

I make a choice as a consumer to go to say Asda for this special offer or Tescos for that - imagine if you got to the checkout and they then said oh yes, I know our advert said that but you can't have BOGOF, the manager has decided against it. I don't expect to BOGOF, but when its offered in national press, that informs what I buy and where. Coupons are the same in my book.

Customer Services should always be polite, informed and CONSISTANT. This is not my experience with Tescos or Asda. They need to make a central decision on what is good for and not good for their business coupon-wise at national level, and then stick to it. If this is 10%, then fine, at least I know. I am now shopping at Waitrose - over 20 mins more drive away becuase I know what i am going to get there. Consistancy.

I had some vouchers from whiskers, and I used two of them yesterday, when I only purchased the whiskers dry food, the Felix pouches were on offer at £1.99 so I bought them instead, and still got the 54p knocked off. Cool!

I prefer to not try and absue the system too much, only ever handing over a load of coupons if I have bought at least some of the products, and in a big weekly shop. I saw a girl last week get £10 quids worth of shopping, and she had about £9.00 in vouchers, and while I commend her money saving, I dont think she bought a single product, and the cashier did eye her bags with suspicion, wondering if she actually had, but couldnt be bothered to check in the end. I prefer not to abuse it, because eventually, vouchers will be produced less and less by the manufacturers, and then we wont get some small saving on our food bills. Id rather get a couple of quid off a week, than pee the 'hand that feeds us' off...

Well the economics of it are all on such a grand scale that it works for the manufacturers and the supermarket...

the manufacturer recieves x thousand coupons from a supermarket chain in relation to x times 100 thousand sales so they are happy. Zing magazine quoted a Cadbury's spokesperson or someone in their advertising pack saying that before they paid zing to feature their money off coupon, only 30% of Asda stores stocked their product, after the Zing campaign, now 90% of Asda's stock their product....I can't rememebr the exact % but it wsa something similar. So for the manufacturer, coupons in magazine increase their product awareness which is worth far more to them than sales from a few products becuase consumers are more likely to buy it again.

the supermarket takes x thousand coupons worth of money off in relation to x times 1000 thousand sales (think how few people use coupons!) so they are more than happy to get your business - they even give products away free to tempt you in their stores, so what's a couple of pound off of a shop!

I'm happy as I am living on a tight budget at the moment until I go back to work after maternity time off.

    All winners!
