Catalogue debt

Options
I did owe £136.92 to a catalogue my ex-girlfriends mother ran.
I say did owe because she has paid off the balance of the catalogue with her credit card.

I was not informed of this until after she'd done it.

She says I owe her £136.92 - but in my opinion I don't, as the money was owed to the catalogue company. I never asked her to clear my amount owing.

Any advice greatly appreciated

Maybe technically you don't, but morally you do. If you can't afford to pay her all in one lump negotiate with her to pay it off bit by bit each week/month. :)

I have to agree with Midas

She didn't have to pay off the debt for you but then why should she have the trouble of not being able to get credit because of your non payment.

I'm sorry but you really do owe her and should pay her back asap.

Another agreement with other posters. You do still owe the debt to her and you should pay her back.

Are you implying that you would not have paid off the catalogue debt?

If not, why are you querying that you now owe her the money? Are you seriously considering not paying her?

I didn't ask her to pay off my debt. She decided that she didn't want anything to do with the catalogue company and paid the whole balance off.
This, in my opinion was a mistake on her part.

But she's using this against me to withold my personal belongings.

I've asked for them back over 3 weeks ago now.
I've sent her a message today telling her that if I don't get my stuff back I'll be going to the police station and reporting the items as stolen.

I wasn't implying that you wouldn't pay off your debts! (I don't even know you) but I was just curious about the question. Sorry if I offended.

I hope that you get your stuff back!

I'm not offended by your observations - indeed, I encourage observation.

The way my Ex's mother has been acting is, to say the least, childish.

I don't really understand the problem here. You say you are willing to pay your debts, so just pay her and get your stuff back.

I agree she has acted foolishly and effectively set herself up as an unpaid debt collector, but don't let this become one of those childish arguments where people end up having huge rows over trivial points of principle. Save the big arguments for things that matter.

No I understand that, but the fact is she did pay it, whatever her reasons where for doing so. I can't speak for her I can only put my opinions across.

But regardless of whether you feel she was in the wrong or not, the money is still owed to her in my opinion, you would have owed it to someone, be it the catalogue company or her, this way your not being chased up for the money being charged interest and fee's and you won't have your name added to the bad debt register.

You've already been through enough problems, don't turn this one into another one, pay her the money, show her your willing to play ball and get your things back. Don't let it turn nasty, it will serve to help no one in the end :)

Do the right thing and pay her what you owe.
