london hotel advice

My mate and I are flying into Gatwick on Friday morning and home again on Sunday. We are going to see Dirty Dancing on Friday night and hopefully Grease/Sound of Music on Saturday night.

Neither of us have been there before so some advice would be great about where to stay.

Budget is about £100 max per room per night - less if possible. We won't be going clubbing but would like to stay somewhere that is safe, clean and within walking distance of some bars and restaurants for two 40 years young ladies!

Is it walkable from eg Oxford Street to Covent Garden?

I know the tube is easy to use but would like to know where you can walk to in about 5 mins (not fond of walking me!)

Have looked at travel inn - possibly Euston? Theres a travel lodge near Aldwych theatre but they only have double rooms available.

Some help please

There is a Travelodge on Drury Lane in Covent Garden. Its also at the top end of Covent Garden so not far from Oxford Street. Have a look on www.travelodge.co.uk for details.

Thanks for the reply - thats the travelodge I mentioned - unfortunately it only has a double room and I need a twin/family room.

Do you know about how long it would take to walk from there to Oxford Street?

try 'active hotels' and 'direct-hotels'. on DH i found a hotel that was £20 pp/pn and it was in earls court. i still cant believe i found one so cheap and good for central transport :)

Thanks - I have looked on lots of sites but its difficult to choose when I have no idea if the hotels are in a good area or whatever.

If anyone can recommend an actual name of a hotel or an area to avoid that would be great.
  • Have a look on Trip Advisor for honest reviews of any hotels which appear to fit the bill.

Hi - I stayed at the Thistle Charing Cross (which is directly adjacent to Charing Cross Train Station) and it was excellent. Within five minutes walk there is Trafalgar Square and all the theatres - we went to see Lord of the Rings at Theatre Royal on Drury Lane. I booked the hotel via cityhotelsdirect (via Quidco - you get money back) and it was just over £100 I think, but I included breakfast (which was WELL WORTH IT). Have a look - Id highly recommend the hotel for location, comfort and safety.

We easily walked to the the theatre, the London Eye and Covent Garden Market. Excellent hotel - would definately stay there again AND it has great reviews on TripAdvisor - specifically with regard to the location.
Hope you get sorted - I really enjoyed LOR BUT would love to see Dirty Dancing - hope you enjoy it!
