Any Tips to Stop Spending??

Good Morning!!

Has anyone got any good tips on how to stop spending money that should go on paying off debts?
I remember someone saying you should put a 'reminder note' in your wallet, but what should that say!

Thanks; I know this seems a really basic question but it's what I struggle with the most :o

I keep a copy of Martin's Money mantra in my purse (which can help)

The other one it to avoid going to the shops!! OR not carry any money with you. I was at my slimming class last night 'Lucy would you like a raffle ticket?' (50p) 'yes... Oh actually I only have 11p on me!!!' So saved myself 50p!

Don't carry money and freeze the credit cards inbags of water - by the time they defrost you may have decided you don't really needit!

Dont carry cash you know you are not going to need. Dont carry cards either!

Personally, for me its checking my bank account every morning. And I have a huge spreadsheet which reflects my bank account but is also a forecast. I check and update this every morning too. I know that I may have £200 in there now, but my forecast proves that XYZ needs to come out before the next pay day so there is no free money.

Agree with Lucy. Dont carry any money around (i usually only carry £1 with me just in case!).

Or put a post it note in your purse with your total debt on it? That might help.

Enter every single penny you spend into something like www.spendingdiary.com to show you exactly where your money is going and how much you actually waste on unnecessary things.
  • the best one to stopm me spending cash ~ moozie/moozies weekly challenge. I tell you if you want the bag on day one and then leave you 50p for the rest of the week you wont buy it! Thats the only way that worked for me having to face everyone on the weekly chalenge.
  • Eager learner has a spread sheet that i've customised, i look at it everyday to remind myself what a state i've got in and also to mark down any spending i have done so i can see where its going.

I find joining in with the challenges on here helpful aswell especially moozies/paps weekly challenge, it really makes you focus on what your spending and because you know your coming on here to report back each day (in the what have you spent today thread) you are careful! Hope that helps

Defo, don't take money out with you, or because its so flipping cold and wet, don't go out until you really need to, and if you have to pop to shop for milk, don't take the kids, and don't buy yourself that choc bar as a treat..my weakness, but i'm learning.

Hi. A lot can depend on what your spending pattern is. If you are an impulse buyer then don't carry cash or cards. If takeaways are your thing then try making and freezing substitutes. My weekness is shopping when I am hungry, those choccie bars and cakes seem to kamikazi themselves into my trolley.
If you are really tempted by large items then work out how many hours/minutes you will have to work to pay it off or how much it puts your debt free day back by.
    Hope this helps.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

Thanks for that link, I like that very much, will sign up to that and use it, it beats my attempt on word at a similar thing
