Recommend me a high street savings account

I would like to start a savings account but would like to be able to go into a branch and access it.

Can anyone recommend any?

Personally I'd avoid Abbey like the plague, bad customer service, and every week I read a horror story about them in the Sunday broadsheet press.

Skipton Building Society offer excellent customer service, but you'd need a branch near you.

The best rates are generally online, but you seem to suggest you want to 'start' a savings account so put a regular amount away each month?

As isofa says the Skipton has great rates but not that many branches.

Brittainia have a good regular savings account at the moment and more branches.

However, if you currently pay tax you should be thinking about using your cash ISA allowance as by not paying tax on your savings you are getting a much better rate generally, than after tax return on other accounts.

Again Brittania have one paying 5.7% and Alliance & Leicester have one paying 5.65% but not branch based. Generally ISAs have deposits or withdrawl conditions too so you have to deposit a minimum each month by DD and make only 1 or 2 withdrawls a year.

If you tell us which part of the country you live in, we can come up with the local branch best buys maybe?
