I aim to upgrade today

Options
I am using a trusty old SE K7501 model, brought back into use after I'd upgraded to Motorola Razr and couldn't get on with it. However my contract is now up and today I aim to upgrade again.

The model I'm after through vodaphone is one my daughter has, SE K850i (orange) which was launched Feb/07. But my V shop tells me that this particular model was not available through them, they have the SE K800i which is as good (they say).

My research shows me that the K800i came out in 2006 and only lacks the distortion feature in the camera software. You may know different, if so you might like to tell me.

Ideally the model I choose, will be free with an extended contract which is only about £20/£23 per month. It will have a large'ish screen (like K810i) and have a 3+ million pixel camera. Whilst I would like to use SE, I'm prepared to consider anything else. Would anyone care to recommend anything please?.

  • They lie. K800 has a 3.2 MP camera, the K850 has a 5 MP camera.

Also, the K800 has the dreaded SE joystick but if your K750 has lasted you well you may be luckier than I was!!

The Nokia N95 is a good choice, 5 MP camera, free on most O2 tariffs but not sure how Vodafone go with it, it's been around for a while. There is an N95 8 GB version which is new. The N82 is new out too, has a 5 MP camera and is essentially the N95 in candybar form and with a Xenon flash as opposed to the N95s LEDs. You may get this on retention, maybe not, depending on spend etc. The N95 and N82 also have a GPS reciever built in and Nokia maps for free, but you have to pay extra for nav functions I believe.

Sorry, in my haste to word perfect, I made an error. It is the SE K810 I'm after (out Feb '07) the SE K800i cam out '06, the SEK850i as you know, is more recent.

As for the joystick, I did mention that. They agreed there was initial problems with dust getting into the joystick opening, but that had been recified with a hidden cup. As for my old model, I've always kept it in a leather cover.

I'll take a look at the Nokia N95. I don't drive and don't really require a wealth of technology.

  • Same things apply to the K810, it's the K800 with a slimmer body, different lens cover (better than the K800's), different buttons, still got the joystick but if you're happy the problems are resolved then that's no problem. It's still a 3.2 MP camera, not as good as the K850's but excellent still. You wouldn't notice the difference if you only view photos on the phone!

The SE K770 is a nice phone. It's 3G and has a 3.2 MP camera with LED flash (basically the same type as your K750). Some reviews said the camera quality was dissapointing for a 3.2 MP unit but it looks ok to me.

I'm taking on board what you say. I remember when they were showing me the K850i, he said three keys were sensitive, in that they operated by allowing you finger to hover. That being so, what about when it's in your pocket and something else hovers and activates it?.

Also, I did see the screen was slightly smaller.

  • I assume the buttons will only respond and do something when the keypad is unlocked.

Sorted. I decided to call in Phones4u, told them I was eager to get a K810i, they told me I might be unlucky as they're now rare. They could get me a previous model, k800i which is very much the same. I asked why they brought out the K810 if it wasn't much improved and was told SE held back because they new they'd be bringing out the K850i.

I told them that Vodaphone offered me this, and would charge me £29 for it. Phones4u said I could have it free and they would simply extend my contract.

My concern about the sensor keypads, was as Alec says, controlled by one locking key. So I've got this as yet unpacked phone and hopefully it will be fine.

you can not activate the touchpad by hovering over it as far as i can see ive had mine about 3 months, you have to touch it, k850i this is

you can set the keypad to autolock aswell after say a min of not being used (this is on any SE so with that unlikely to be dialing out much)
