travel insurance (pre existing conditions)

Hi,

trying to look into getting travel insurance for a trip to Italy in April. it will be the only time we go abroad this year so we just want a single trip cover for me, my husband and our 1 yr old daughter.

travel insurance always stumps me. I have asthma which is well under control with inhalers, never had a hospital admission. I am also diagnosed as coeliac though I dont recieve any care for this and am not on the gluten free diet. my husband recently went to his gp and was diagnosed with pilonidal sinus, had antibiotics but isnt getting any treatment for it.
soooo... what do we do about declaring these conditions? I guess we have to declare them or the insurers will find out IF we made a claim and so therefore why bother having insurance at all if you know what I mean. if I didnt declare them and say we had a flight cancelled (something non medical related) where would we stand? would they pay out or be sneaky and say..well you didnt declare your colieac? even if it had no bearing on the claim.

I def want to mention the asthma, but the others make me mad as they have no impact!

just did a quote with travelibity and it came out at £39 for the three of us and let us put all our conditions in. finding it hard to compare prices online as many wont let me be specific about conditions.

also then they want a £100 excess. our holiday only cost £150, flights just under that...?!!

thanks :)

  • I also have asthma and recently we got an annual travel insurance with a new bank account that we opened. Told them all about the asthma as although, like you, totally under control with inhalors etc I didnt want to be in a foreign hospital not being able to breathe and not understanding the language. They charged me an extra £35 for my conditions which whilst is quite a fair bit - at least I know if something did happen I would be looked after. Always best to be on the safe side especially in a foreign country.!!
If you had a problem and they found out about it you def would not be covered.

My 8 year old son has a medical condition, what i normally do is get a normal family policy & then buy a single policy from medi-cover. Hope this helps, their website is

Hi - I was in the same situation with my other half last year - He has thyrotoxicosis (OVERACTIVE thyroid gland) and Columbus Direct.com were VERY competitive. They name the pre-existing conditions on the policy so that there is no doubt you are covered and they only charged us something like £4 more I think.

We are going to USA in June this year and will definately be using them again. Thankfully he didnt have to claim, but its all in the name of piece of mind isnt it?

Check them out online - you may need to call them but they are very efficient.

thanks that was a useful link. got lots more quotes today! the most expensive so far being £52 and cheapest with columbus direct that came out at £25 - just £2 or so more than the web quote with no pre-existing.

am keeping looking still. getting tired of it now though! but seeing as I have already saved £15 by not taking what I thought was the cheapest quote I am spurred on to carry on looking. even though my toddler just got her hands on the laptop and deleted all the tabs I had open...

Glad to be of help - I checked out quite a few after reading the thread on here but Columbus came out the cheapest - I hope this is still the case when I come to use them in June. Good Luck!

    Hi

Just found this thread, I find navigating forums difficult at times...

I was diagnosed with slight hypertension and high cholesterol.

After following an exercise scheme my blood pressure has come down to normal and the cholesterol slightly down.

(ask your doctor or practice nurse about this exercise scheme, as its not well publicised. It's called PACE, for those with any medical problems that could benefit from exercise; such as heart conditions, blood pressure, arthritis, asthma etc, and is brilliant!)

The question is: would I be classed as having a "pre-existing medical condition" for insurance purposes?

I have never needed medication for either of these problems, but if I had a stroke or something could they refuse to pay out?

    PS I am nearly 60

    Thanks

PS I'm going abroad at very short notice - next week - and haven't yet been able to arrange insurance!

A friend recommended this site, and it's brilliant!
