  • Im heading to San Francisco on March 2nd for 7 nights, so thanks everyone for the tips!
I did find a book on play.com for £3.99 which is worth it, its just called San Francisco http://www.play.com/Books/Books/4-/3409855/San-Francisco/Product.html

    Hope that helps

  • I'm in the minority in the respect that San Fran did next to nowt for me at all (I did enjoy the Alcatraz trip at night & the Golden Gate Bridge) -- and I've never found so many weirdos in a single place before !

I did however really enjoy visiting the USS Hornet
in Alameda Point, over on the Oakland side (I actually preferred Oakland to San Fran).

    enjoy your planning.

If you are in SF for a few days, I would recommend getting a Muni Passport for unlimited rides on the cable cars and buses. Otherwise, you would have to pay each time you ride the cable car. Whilst on the cable car, stop off at Lombard Street - where you can see one of the most crookedest streets!

More info on the Muni Passport:-

If you like Chinese food, then head over to Chinatown - it is really good value.

Also, definitely go and see the Golden Gate bridge.

Yep it is, specialises in garlic garlic and more garlic. Google stinking rose San Francisco..
  • Since you brought up food I would recommend In and Out Burger. I am living in Wales after being a California native and that's first on my list everytime I go back. In San Francisco I highly recommend The Cliff House. Absolutely stunning view. We often just go in for a nice bowl of clam chowder as the menu can be high end. Also if you are driving in and out does drive thru and they are fast so don't let a long line scare you off. Try Taco Bell for fast/drive through Mexican Food. Getting hungry just writing about it!!

Agreed, whilst you're at Cliff House area, check out Sutro Baths ruins.

Take awalk round China town,as SF has a large Chinese population,
its interesting to see the live fish and other things being sold for food.
Then have a meal in one of the small chinese restaurants, choose by pointing, very cheap very tasty, you get a few "interesting" things, but mainly really good,we ate in various places a number of times, dont be put off by the appearance of the place.
Would like others recomend a bus/ trolley bus pass, good value, fun and the people on the buses like to talk to strangers, unlike UK.Even the freaks in Haight Ashbury are cool and not such a hassle as the UK variant.

Oh, I am jealous, I would love to be going back to San Francisco. I have a friend who lives there but unfortunately they are moving back to the UK so there goes my cheap accommodation :(

I have stayed in hotels though and would highly recommend the Orchard hotel (see tripadvisor for reviews, number 3 in their list I think!). It is up the hill from Macys/Market street shopping but if I managed to walk it anyone can! Also the cable car goes straight past and stops just on the corner so very handy.

I have also stayed at the Parc 55 Renaissance hotel which was amazing but that was in 2000 so it may have changed since I was there, amazing views from the 25th floor!

Pier 39 is very very touristy, and it seems to have got worse over the last few years. I was there in September and only walked to the end of the pier and back as it was so busy and tacky I walked away very quickly!

If you get a chance on your travels to call into Monterey (my geography is bad but if you are driving up from LA you might go past (?)) the aquarium is well worth a visit. I went in Sept and they had an amazing otter enclosure and feeding time was great to watch.

I can echo what has been said about the travel pass for San Francisco, works on buses, trams and also the cable car. I can recommend the last ride of the night on the cable car, the drivers really let it go and it is quite a thrill zooming down the hills. OK, will end there as I sound really sad now :o

    Have a great trip.

Oh, one more thing to add. The first time I went I was really really shocked at the amount of homeless people that were around, especially around one of the squares on the main shopping street. They can look really intimidating (as there are so many) but they are actually fine and I have never had a problem.
