Another newbie sewer here. I'm currently at the debating buying a machine stage and have borrowed one from MIL to have a go with (when my easy projects from stich club arrive).
I've not used a machine since school (14ish years ago) but am sick of buying things that are just an 'ok ish' fit and need rehemming after a few washes (and don't find wonderweb much of a time saver).
If/when I decide to buy my own machine what would you reccommend I look for? New/used (is it worth paying the extra for the warrenty?)? 1step or 4step button hole?
I have been looking at Janome machines as this is what both my mum and MIL have had for donkey's years without issue. The machines I am looking at seem to be around £90 - £130, which is still a sizeable investment.
Thank you for any advise.0 -
It is getting winterish so thought I'd make something with a piece of fleece that has been gathering dust in my fabric stash.
I am just about to put pattern pieces to fabric - am I right in thinking that with fleece there isn't a grain in the fabric really, so I could lay the pieces in any direction?
I have not worked with fleece before, so any tips much appreciated."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0 -
You're right in thinking you can lay your pattern pieces in any direction. HTH.I won't buy it if I can make or borrow it instead

I'd love to start sewing and am getting a machine for christmas. I'm liking the Janome 525s. I've had a play on it and think its the one for me! A question for those of you in the know. Do machines come down much in the January sales or do they remain pretty static. I ask because I've searched for this machine and only seen it at £199. Some department stores have 20% sales at the mo and it seems like a good time to buy if they stock it. Or do I take a chance and hope it comes down further in January!? What with sewing taking off again I'm wondering if they'll ever come down that much. What do you think?

You do get sewing machines in the January sales but its not forced to be the model you are looking at.
Personally I think if you find a machine you are comfortable with and is a pleasure to use then just go for it. BUT with the January sales just round the corner I'd wait and keep my fingers crossed.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4.............................NCFC member No: 00005.........

Using my machine mainly for repairs now used to make a lot of clothes at one time, think i might start again but it can be expensive now, have started remodelling charity shop buys and making and cutting down curtains etc, i have a machine which does zig zag and can do buttonholes i have wondered if buying a second hand overlocker would be worthwhile or not ,it might not be worth the outlay, does anyone have one and do you use it a lot more0

Sorry if anyone has posted this before, I did a search but couldn't find it. In my latest Which magazine it shows a mini-sewing machine that John Lewis has brought out for £49. You can see it on their website here:

I don't need to do much sewing, so looks great for what I need. I have an overlocker and a sewing machine.
I use the overlocker to make up most garments as it seams and neatens the edges at the same time, saving sewing time. I still use my sewing machine as well as you say button holes, for darts and many other uses.
An overlocker is less forgiving as it trims the seams as well and can prove fun at times.
There is a thread on here about overlockers. I'll have a look for you.
