Is anyone familiar with an industrial sewing machine? I have a Seiko ( my sister gave it to me , but i can`t ask her cos she`s now moved miles away !)
I`m trying to find out how i can tighten up the tension underneath .
My problem is that i can`t get the bobbin rewinder thing to work !! i know its something i`m not doing lol so i`ve filled my bobbins on my domestic sewing machine and thats caused the tension problem !
Anyone help please ?0 -

Hi all,
Just wanted to say hello and join this thread.
I'm 29 and big on the creative design side of things and now want to see if I can translate my designs into actual pieces.
No experience of sewing, textiles or anything so this may be a big flop but I enjoy it and, after a bit of a low period in my life, its given me a spark again. Have got a sewing machine arriving tomorrow and going to have a play with it and see how it goes.0 -

Wishing you luck with your project. What are you planning on making/creating.
I am just back off of my holidays. Going to be making some handbags this week, as I really need a stock to be able to put on etsy. Need cash as soon as I can after having a holiday.!! :rolleyes:When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Hi all. I put my first post on this thread in June, full of intentions to get up and at it and start sewing. Well, best laid plans and all that! I found myself in hospital with a nasty little eye infection, lots of talk of removing said eye but still have it! Anyway, upshot being I have up to now done no sewing whatever. Good news though is that I have next week off of work, have already gone through cupboard and found loads of old curtains and will be making up some curtains and linings next week. Eeek! Wish me luck!0

Good luck Thats Me,
Once you start the first bit of sewing, and all your things are about you, it gets easier to sew.
Says me, who has cut out 6 handbags, but not started to sew them.
This afternoon I am out with my DS and Mum, so I will not be sewing until thisevening. But before I make the handbags up, I have a throw for Biggest of Mooloo's that needs splitting down the middle and putting an extra panel in, so that it will go over her sofa, and be bright and bold enough to go with her new decor!. All fabrics are already things that we have!.
Tomorrow I have my granddaughter, probably for the weekend, so my sewing will be limited to the evenings when I have got her to sleep. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Ouch, good luck Thats Me, that sounds like a tough few months, hope all is well now. Have fun with the curtains etc, plenty of advice available here and online if you get stuck.
Mooloo, meant to ask you whether the fabric stall at MK market is there every day or on specific days? I can get there occasionally, bought some jersey fabric years and years ago from there but can't remember what day that was (can't remember what day it is today these days). Thanks

I've had a good morning altering an old pair of plain black trousers (they were my school trousers from when I was about 13 and although they fit were to plain for my tastes) so they are now something I'd wear. I only planned on altering them so I could use them tonight as part of a halloween costume as I didn't have the money to buy anything new. However seeing them now (this was the first time I did anything clothes related so rather pleased with myself) I think I'll put them into good use all the time
. I can't wait to make something from scratch and really see some of my designs for real. I really love my sewing machine .

Hi, I am a singer/dancer and I would like to make my own costumes eventually and dresses for parties as my friend's mum makes her sister and her's dresses for parties and they are stunning. I have a £50 sewing machine from Dunelm Mill and plenty of large fabric remnants and the Dorling Kindersley Complete Book of Sewing but don't know where to start. No courses at local college and the only local sewing teacher charges £70 for a sewing basics lesson. I've always been very creative and come from a family thats been dressmaking for generations but none of whom live in England unfortunately! Any advice would be much appreciated! I'm also only 5"2 and would like to be able to alter trousers and replace zips (got loads needing replacing!). What would you say were the basic must have tools for a beginner? Have printed some free Burda patterns off so I can start once I have a kit assembled.0

being honest, your money would be best spent on having some basic lessons
i spent years teaching myself to sew, but it wasnt until i actually attended classes, that i found the 'easy' way to get good results. yes, before the lessons, i could run up fairly presentable garments (to the untrained eye), but once i had proper training, the sewing speed and quality improved no end (my language also took a turn for the better lol)
but as for must have tools. a good pair of dressmakers scissors (that you keep under lock and key, so no-one uses them to cut anything other than fabric), a pair of snips (small scissors for cutting threads), a good selection of various machine/handswwing needles, ie ballpoint, denim, etc., decent threads (tbh i swear by gutterman as cheap threads just break all the time, and fray), a box of pins, tailors chalk, and a tracing medium (i use STP im sure its mentioned elsewhere in this thread)
other than that, i dont think you really need anything else, other than a huge bank balance, to pay for all the fabric you buy
