    Hi everyone,

I am going to start making my own clothes again. Its something to do and means I can get what I like instead of walking around the shops looking at clothing that's not my style. But here is my problem, we used to have loads of fabric shops and market stalls, but they have all gone. I need to buy fabrics online, can anyone recommend good web sites???

    Thanks guys.

Hi, I have started to buy a new magazine, simply called "SEW". Issue 5 just out in WHSmiths anyway. Its £5.99 a month. Comes with a pattern each issue as well as lots of little projects.
There are plenty of websites there that you can buy things from. If you read this thread you will also come across some of the sites, but here goes
most common one I have come accross is
    https://www.abakhan.co.uk
    then there is also
    https://www.fabricland.co.uk
    https://www.macculloch-wallis.co.uk
    https://www.puddlecrafts.co.uk
    https://www.textilegarden.com
    https://www.ultimatefabrics.co.uk
    https://www.sewing-online.com
just a few to get you started.
    Happy hunting and happier sewing!

I have been making nappies!!! Fitted ones out of old towels, some microfibre and some fleece.

Want to try making some cute baby things, might go and have a look for a book ni the library.

I have a lovely pattern for nappies, but I ordered the wrong kind of microfibre and wanted the towelling type, but will be having another go, when the new grandson is born in January. (Well I will have a go before he is born, but you know what I mean.).
Decided to unpick an old dress that I have that I used to love, to make into a pattern for another dress, see if I can churn one out, tomorrow, before I come back to Oxford. Want a "new" dress to take on Holiday, but dont have the funds to buy one. (BF has booked the holiday.!). So thats going to keep me busy today.

I've just happened across this thread this morning, and am thrilled to find it. I've just returned to more home dressmaking after some years away. My daughter is a "well-built" young lady so I've been making her posh frocks for dances at school and now uni. This summer I made myself some t-shirt tops using bought tops as a pattern, then space-dyed them to the colours I wanted - great success (made sure I used cotton not poly thread). White T-shirting from Fabric Land was under £3 a metre and a loose long top needs about 1.5 - 2m. Thus "designer" unique fashion for bargainaceous prices. Now I've got the bug back again, so when I've finished the curtains and blind I'm making for our living room, I'll be making myself some warmer clothes for winter.

last week I went to Milton Keynes market with my parents, and I found some lovely Woolmix fabric at £3.00 a metre.! They had alsorts of fabrics, at about £1- £4 a metre. I bought some offwhite woolmix to make myself a jacket for the winter. Now that the kids are no longer there to make it mucky!
I intend to make as many of my family presents this year, as I am able. Men its harder, but with Fleece around, that means I can probably make scarves, gloves and hats, etc etc.
I havent felt this enthusiastic for sewing since I was at boarding school! When I made it my job in the early 90's I began to hate it! I was sewing for so long. And gave 90% of my stuff away to the local college students! Now I keep thinking wish I had this or that. My mum has been great in giving me bits and pieces and so have plenty of people on this site!. I really have been challenging my mind, and recycling too!. Making a jewellry roll, makeup bag, and a tote/duffle bag out of bits hanging around at BF's. I have even got my sewing machine here now. Not only am I mending for him and his family, but I am creating with the things they were throwing out too!.

    Hello!
I'm desperate to make my own maternity clothes as I live out in a very rural place and the nearest shop selling maternity wear is 60 miles away!
I know how to make blinds, nappies (!), baby slings but every attemtp at clothes making has been a disaster!

I've looked and asked for any local garment making classes but there are none.
Does anyone have any suggestions...maybe there's a wonderful 'Teach yourself' book out there? Or a good website?

Sorry if this has been asked before but this thread is amazingly long so I haven't read it through.
