One could (and many do) say something similar about house prices in the UK.

Others tell us Turkey, Croatia, Morroco is the "new property hot spot"

Spain is still the chosen destination for a house in the sun. Some predict global warming will make it impossible for us to go their soon.

For sure do your research, but make up your own mind what is best for you. Whatever tommorrow is another day, who knows how many more we each have, let's not waste it worrying about what if?

There is an interesting article on page 78, of June/July "source" John Lewis free mag. Apparently this couple have found it is still profitable to develop property in spain. You may be interested in this link> http://www.holidaysinvejer.com/

However I don't have my rose coloured specs on and I would guess my own property value is down circa 10% on last year.

I plan to spend time away from the UK after retirement. Because I want to share that time between Spain and France and I don't want to buy I've started to do a bit of research.

So far I've found many properties for £500 that look just what I want. That means I will pay £1500 a year for my winters away. This is very cheap, much cheaper than owning.

However, I know it's not for everyone.

Renting is by far the safest, cheapest option at present. I know one couple who sold in the UK, bought a house in spain and a mobile caravan in the UK - so they could save on council tax! Some are selling their homes in the UK and renting / squatting with friends in the expectation they will buy a bargain in two years time. What works for some .....

I am off to Melle for a holiday in August, I guess that is near you Francophile?

We're in a little village near the coast called Portiragnes. beziers is the nearest big town and is 10 km from us.

I did not realise you were on the coast, I thought you were SW nearer Bordeaux. I have stayed in Cessenon-sur-Orb, been to Beziers and Carcassonne, all lovely places.
You are safe enough, I was not looking for an invite. There are a few of us touring in the area and the last thing you would want is a dozen roughy toughy bikers dropping in :rotfl:

My French next door neighbours are Harley D riders so I'm well used to bikers as a lot of their friends call to visit them during the summer. My DH (who's 56) and obviously having a late life crisis passed his motorcycle test last year. He can't ride anything bigger than a 250cc at the minute but I think he sees himself cruising down through France on something a lot bigger when he's got rid of the "R" plates.
