Setanta Sports ....pay per con

A few months ago I tried to buy a pay per view boxing match from setanta. I went through the automated booking system 6 hours before the fight. They actually switched on the broadcast on my TV just after the fight had finished. I cancelled the payment - not paying for an event that they failed to supply. A few weeks later an indian lady phoned me to ask me what the problem was - I explained in great detail and she said could I write in. I reluctantly agreed if they sent me a prepaid envelope. She said that they don't have prepaid envelopes to which I replied neither do I. Now, 8 months later they are threatening to take me to court. I have tried to ring the rip off 0870 number on the letter but it goes through to an irrelevant voice recording and then just plays an engaged tone - yet another rip off. I am sick of this but don't want a court action or false debt allegation hanging over me - can anyone suggest a way forward please ????

It's a bit like the £40 parking ticket scenario that ends up at £583,119,486.27 for non payment except you never got the ticket!
Just remember no person or company is perfect 100% of the time.
Some people are fools to themselves!

I suppose the fight would not have cost more than £15, ignore the threat, they won't waste their time taking you to court.
A few years ago, I had a siimilar situation, where it was alleged I owed £22, I must have had 8 or 9 letters from different people all threatening to take legal action, I just ignored them and eventually they stopped, I was in the right, as you are, so let them get on with it!
Don't waste time and money on a solicitor.Filiss0 -
This annoys me with a lot of companies. They are happy to take order and money over the phone but wont deal with problems over the phone and expect you to write.
Must be thier way of keeping the complaint stats down.
I would just ignore it too, but that might no be the right thing to do if you are worried about your credit rating. Mine is that bad they couldn't make it worse!0 -
I also had trouble with Setanta's Sky Satellite offering. They made cancellation after 13 months a jump-through-hoops operation and even when cancelled, still took money. I had to create a 3 way call between Visa, Setanta and me and get a ref number to prove we had had the cancellation conversation. Their phone staff are trained to prevent cancellations I believe.0

Buy a stamp and send a letter.

Thanks for the replies folks. I too am sick of these companies - they are incompetent and such cheapskates that they can't even employ someone who speaks clear fluent English -(never mind pay for a prepaid envelope) why should I buy a stamp and provide stationery for their benefit ?!! We will continue to be walked over and bullied as a nation by these losers until people realise that they do have a backbone! .......I am still waiting for my court appearance.Ste4mhammer0

Don't get yourself deeper into trouble. Buy a stamp, take a deep breath, write a professional and polite letter explaining the situation. Surely thats the best option rather than waiting to see if this in some way affects your credit rating in the future or your ablity to order PPV from anyone. Surely its not worth the stress? Is the problem the cost of the stamp or you just have a a problem with Setanta? It would seem to be your problem not theirs. They just see you at defaulting on payment and you are now in the system to be prosecuted/and or your credit blacklisted. Not just your credit remember but your wife/family etc. to.
Swallow your pride my friend and don't try and buck the system here. It would seem that you will and in all likelyhood lose,

I hadn't read your last post but get the feeling you've made your mind up already even though you asked for advice on a way forward.
Look at the majority of replies to your post.
You and consequently your family have nothing to gain from standing on some sort of 'principal' ground here. I'll say it again and for the last time. My advice is write a polite, professional letter and quickly!
You have been advised!
