Fraud on my Barclaycard

Hi Money Saving Experts

On Saturday I noticed that there are 2 transactions for the same day on my credit card that I did not do. One is for easyjet and the other one is for alpharooms.com. Together they come to nearly £600. I still have my creditcard in my posession and nobody else knows my pin number. I am generally very careful with my credit card details and can't understand how this has happened. I do use my card to make the occasional online purchase and think that somebody must have taken my details from an online purchase.

I immediately contacted Barclaycard and they have blocked the card and will be sending me out a new one along with a new pin number. They have also placed the biggest transaction into dispute and will be sending me out dispute forms to fill in where apparently I can detail both transactions to dispute. They have said that I won't be liable for the bill at the moment until the dispute is resolved which should take around 28 days.

Easyjet have initially refused to give me any details of the booking apparently due to the data proection act and suggested that I contact the local police. I have emailed them again asking them to refer me to the section of the data protection act that prevents them disclosing the information and reminding them that they have a duty to supply me with any information they hold relating to myself.

Alpharooms have said they are passing the enquiry onto their fraud dept and they will be in touch.

My question is should I report the matter to the local police and is there anything else I should/need to do? Also is there a chance that Barclaycard will try and pin this onto me and are there any traps to look out for such as loaded questions on the dispute form? I definitely have not made these purchases and I am 100% sure that this is fraudulent activity on my account but I am worried that I might get landed with the £600 bill if I lose the dispute somehow.

Many thanks
Darwood

You are not liable for the transactions stated, you are protected by the banking code of conduct. You still have your card, and your pin has not been disclosed.

Report it to the police just to get a crime number, you will need this for Barclaycard. Let them deal with the other companies, it is not your job to do so.

It will all get sorted out in a short amount of time, I speak from experience.

It makes you think about every card transaction, but your amount is a small drop in the ocean.

Don't worry, it will get sorted out.. unfortunately these things happen all the time and Barclaycard will be well aware of the procedure to follow in this instance.

Obviously you havn't used the card yourself and so you should get your money back without a problem.

Spoke to the local police and they said that Barclaycard handle the reporting to the police and will hand the whole thing over to them once they have looked into it if necessary. I will wait for the forms from Barclaycard to arrive to see what it says.

I'm lucky they only took £600 as my limit is much higher.

Thank you both for your advice and reassurance.

Guess I just have to play the waiting game. I would love to know who has done it. I hope they haven't flown yet and they get stopped at the checkin.... Highly unlikely I know. Maybe I watch too many tv shows!

Don't worry, I had couple frauds on my barclaycard, call barclaycard and repote asap. They will cancel your current card and re-issue you new one.

It took about 6 weeks for barclaycard to process forms and return money to my account.
All I ask is the chance to prove that money can't make me happy.
  • Someone has just purchased an £1150 Apple Mac in an online or telephone transaction using my wife's Barclaycard. All reported. Three points. 1: The retailer will not tell us the address the item was sent to 'Data Protection' as above. 2: It cost me to get my company through the PCI DSS standard (Payment Card Industry Card Security Standard) I'd like to see a fine levied on the retailer who disclosed the information, but of course this THEFT will never be followed up. 3: If I could afford a Mac I would buy one, this PC is dire!

Why do we have to be so passive when someone steals over £1000 from us. There is no immediate apology from the card company or retailer. The whole situation with Credit Card fraud and no processes to protect us. My suggestion to anyone wealthy enough is to cut them up - this is what the Fraud Manager at the large retailer involved has done. Her words.."It happens all the time"

Technically, they didn't exactly steal your money. It's the banks money they stole.

  • Hello,

Just to mirror other peoples comments really. I had £345 (approx) taken from my Barclaycard account a few months after having the card. It was done from Ireland via western union. The reclaim/refund situation is fairly quick and uniform, they seem to be quite succeptable to online fraud at the moment but they deal with it quickly and refund the interest as well. I did TRY to use my credit card online to buy a games console, however an issue, or 'proposed' perhaps issue, meant that the transaction didn't go through, it may have been that site where the robbers got my details.

Don't worry about it, it happens and you have no reason to worry.

Hope it's resolved asap for you!

Just to give an update I filled in the Barclaycard forms and the money was refunded no problem. Bit of hassle and worry but alright in the end. Thanks to everyone for their comments.
  • Tried to log on to Barclaycard's site last night and found that it wouldn't accept my password. Phoned them to discover that my password had been changed, my home address had been changed, and there were £1800 of pending transactions.

Found Barclaycard's whole handling of the situation to be a farce, and had to continually argue with them to get them to even bother to consider the possiblity of fraud.

I asked exactly how my password/address could have been changed by someone else and was advised that it was probably someone hacking their website.

So there you go, Barclaycard's own website isn't secure apparently! How reassuring!!!
