I tried them all last year!!!

I brought about 6 different bushes last year and had varying degrees of success. All of my raspberries grew, one goosberry bush did well and one blueberry.

Was disappointed but now reading the thread will hope to do better this year.

I do liked poundland for gardening basics, for a quid you can't but give it a go!
Wandered away from the MSE track for a while but am back and on a mission! Debts cleared nearly £18k. Now to start saving ...
  • I couldn't get a raspberry bush in poundland but did get one in Wilkinsons for a £1. But it doesn't say if it is summer or autumn fruiting does anyone know which they are in there?
    thanks
  • i bought a pear tree in wilkinsons today and a lady behind me said did i know that i needed a male and a female . how do you sex a pear tree?
my neighbour has apple and pear trees so will that be ok?

  • LLL I think it depends on the type of the apple/pear. Some are more self fertile than others. If there are other fruit trees around you then you might be ok. At the price in Wilkos I'd say it was worth a chance

I didn't know trees had sexes. You do need a pollination partner. You might find your neighbours pear tree does the trick, or as JM says, some trees are particially self pollinating.
It depends when your tree is in flower, partners have to be in flower at the same time.

If you've got loads of space then the cheap things from these places are ok, if you only have a small space, then I would go for decent known plant types.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.
