Just been to Wilkinsons and was delighted to see they've brought their gardening section up to speed. They have blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry in fact, virtually all berry types as cuttings (not sure of the technical term) for about a pound. Even saw a grape vine/plant and mini pear tree. They also have about 6 different varieties of seed potatoes from first earlies to maincrop and about 3-4 varieties of onion bulbs as well as the strawberry bulbs. Never used them before but spoke to a chap who was loading up his basket with them who has an allotment and he says he has used them every year and apart from last year when it was too wet, never had a problem with them
  • I bought a black currant plant from Poundtime 2 years ago and it is really starting to take off - I also bought a gooseberry plant at the same time but that died without producing and leaves at all.

Silly question but if I buy the bare root "stick" of the blackcurrant wrapped in cardboard from Wilk's now and plant it, won't it only bear fruit next year? I think these berry type bushes take 2 years to start....am I wrong?
  • My plant fruited the same year but that could be because I didn't cut it right down to the ground - I think you are supposed to cut everything down to about 2 inches in the 1st year to encourage growth for the next year.

I think it depends on whether you have the patience to wait a year or just want fruit now !

I want instant gratification!!! Kidding...if I have to wait a year then so be it, though I have just read on the internet that if you want a full crop over summer in the same year as purchase, it is best to get a 2 year old (or more) plant. Rang B&Q and they will only get the bushes in about March. Did yours produce a good crop that first year? How about subsequent years?
  • The only Raspberry's that I've found cheaper than £1 are from the Mirror gardening club:

    http://www.mirrorgarden.co.uk/Index.cfm?fuseaction=category.search&search=raspberry

£21.85 for thirty (10 x 3 varieties) including postage and they will give you 10 Echinacea Purpurea plants as a free gift.
  • In the 1st year i got about 20 berries, 2nd year quite a few more and I am hopefull that this year will be good as the plant is looking quite good at the moment.
  • Never had any probs with poundland seeds and theyre good value.

For those who haven't seen them the packs have 6 varieties in each. They do, as far as I can remember, a basic veg pack (carrots, onions, cabbage, that kinda thing.. traditional veg), a salad pack (lettuces, spring onions, radish etc), and the two i got today which were 'oriental' (sweet peppers, jalapeno peppers, coriander, pak choi, lemon balm, mustard greens), and 'mediterranean veg' (purple basil, aubergine, lettuce, radiccio, oregano, roma tomatoes). I'm happy as I would have spent the £2 at least on jalapenos and aubergine, so i got 10 other varieties 'free' :)
