    do this

Please download ComboFix to the desktop from one of the following links:

    Link1

    Link 2

    Link 3

    Double-click combofix.exe

    Follow the prompts.

(Don't click on the window while the program is running, it may cause your system to hang.)
Please post the log it produces

you need to follow this afterwards

get someone to download the combifix program to a cd for you

in the meantime update spybot , then boot to safe mode and run spybot

booting into Safe Mode with these instructions.
    • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
    • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
    • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
    • Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.
    • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
    • When you are finished with all troubleshooting, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would

the software you downloaded was a scam , which has shut down your download options , you need to get someone to download combifix to a CD , also get them to download www.superantispyware.com ( the free blue button) and put that on the same CD and install them both

    run combifix as instructed above

install superatispyare and then boot into safe mode and run that

in the meantime if you can update spybot and run that in safe mode

Does that mean one of the 3 links above resulted in a scam download? It just reads like that...

I read it that katie1 originally followed a link in an automatic 'error message' alert on her computer, which caused the initial problem, and this link was scam

No it means the pop up warning the poster got saying "WARNING you have a spyware etc etc etc Download this program NOW!" was a hoax because their AV software didn't block it so they installed a trojan. Before they had a small problem... now they have a huge one.

Ideally if you knwo someone with some IT knowledge ask them to hook your drive up as a slave to theirs (fully protected and up to date with all Windows patches and AV software updates) and get them to scan and clean as a slave. I used to have a system set up just for this (used to run a tech support centre for an AV company) and I found this was by far the easiest way of preventing loss of data. On the other hand I am so anal about security I rebuild my systems at least once a year and back everything up about once a month...
