How do I change my IP Number

Hello
I would like to be able to change my IP address. Can someone help me how to do this. I currently have Virgin Broadband. The modem is connected to a wirless router and I have a USB connector that allows me to pick up the internet. If I unplug my modem I believe the IP number changes after a while. For me to pick up the new IP number do I have to connect my PC directly to the router or will the IP address change if I connect wirelessly via the USB connector.
Any help is much appreciated!
Cheers

so long as you have disconnected the modem you shouldn't need to change anything on the router or pc, once the modem reconnects you will have a new IP (i've never connected via usb, but makes sense), unless your problem is with the IP assigned by the router, probably in the form 192.168.x.x, not the 78.x.x.x, in which case you need to 'fix' the ip with either the pc or router, make/model/os needed to help with that one.Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

Many thanks for your help tonyhague
The router is Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adapter #2
When I go to properties it says:-
IP Address 192.168.2.4
Defaullt Gateway 192.168.2.1
When I search my IP address using IP Finder it is 82.17.136.42 if I am wireless.
If I plug in directly to the modem it is 82.17.138.193
So many numbers!!!
I assume that if I turn the modem off and back on that the 82.17.138.193 will be the number that will change.
I could quite easily plug my PC in directly as I have a long ethernet cable and if the 82.17.138.193 number changes then this is great!!
Thanks for your help. I'm not the most literate PC person!!0 -

yes, that is correct.
ethernet is always preferable to USB.
you've surprised me by stating 2 different ip addresses, for wired and wireless (the 192.168.2.x would be different though), was the check carried out at different times?
why would you want to change your IP anyway? fixed IP is something many people look for from a providerUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0
